Applying for a Change to F-1 Status

If you are currently in the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa, it is possible to apply for a change of your status through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). (Exception: Those in J-1 status subject to the 212(e) home residency requirement are not eligible.)

A Change of Status (COS) requires that you file Form I-539 with the USCIS, which also requires a substantial fee. Prior to filing Form I-539, you must be admitted to an academic program, and the institution must issue you a Form I-20.

It is important to meet with an International Student Advisor if you wish to change your status to F-1. There are many different factors that must be taken into consideration when changing your status.

Items required for the COS process are:

• Form I-539 and Fee
• Financial Documentation
• Letter of Admission, or proof of current enrollment
• Copies of your passport, visa stamp, I-94 and other relevant documents related to your status
• Receipt for payment of SEVIS I-901 fee

Additional documents may be required depending on your specific situation. During your appointment with an International Student Advisor, you will learn exactly which documents will be required in your case.

Please be aware that the COS process results in F-1 status, but an F-1 visa is not issued. Visas may only be issued overseas at a U.S. consulate or embassy. F-1 status allows you to stay legally in the U.S., but you will need to obtain an F-1 visa if you leave the U.S. and intend to re-enter.

Individuals in B1/B2 (visitor) or F2 (F-1 Dependent) Status

Individuals in B1/B2 (visitor) or F2 (F-1 Dependent) status are required by law to change to F-1 status prior to beginning a degree program. Because the process of changing to F-1 status can take up to 3 months, it is important to start the application process early.
