Immersion Spanish Language Study With Onsite Exposure to Primary and Community Health Care in a Developing Country
APPROXIMATE DATES
- Summer: mid May - early August (students are required to participate a minimum of two weeks in the program)
- Students will depart as a group generally a few days after Mother's Day and students will return individually.
ACADEMIC PROGRAM
- The Honduras Language & Cultural Immersion Program is an immersion Spanish language study with onsite exposure to primary and community health care in a developing country. The experience provides 20 hours/week of one-on-one instruction in the Spanish language, using the facilities of the “Escuela de Idiomas Truxillo”, the Salvador Parades Hospital and volunteer physician preceptors in Trujillo, Honduras.
- Students spend two half-days/week mentored by Honduran physicians working at the public hospital, Salvador Parades, the only hospital in the region. Students also spend a minimum of one half-day per week volunteering with local public health clinics and with a private medical clinic at a local orphanage.
- Students will not receive credit.
ELIGIBILITY
- Any student having completed their MS1 year and in good academic standing from any of the nine regional campuses may apply for participation.
- Program is limited to 12 participants.
HOUSING
- Students will live with a Honduran host family.

FINANCIAL AID
- IUPUI scholarships, grants and loans applicable to program costs.
(Performance scholarships, Guaranteed Tuition certificates, fee courtesies, Indiana Higher Education Awards and
awards to children of disabled veterans not applicable.)
