Jamaica

APPROXIMATE DATES

• The program begins with six class hours in the US prior to departure for Jamaica.
• Program participants will be in Jamaica from mid July to mid August.
• Students will attend four class hours in the US upon their return from Jamaica.

PROGRAM ORGANIZATION

• Led by Anthropologist Hilary E. Kahn.
• Students will have the opportunity to go on a variety of weekend activities.
• A unique program where service learning in Jamaica is combined with coursework in the US
• There will be a US course based component prior to departure and upon arrival.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

• Learn about the world through culture and service in Jamaica.
• Enrolled students will receive 4 credits for their participation.
• There will be six hours of class time before departure and another four upon return. In Jamaica, there will be fifteen hours of instruction throughout the four weeks. Attendance is required for the classes in the US; however, the faculty director can facilitate the use of interactive video for students to join in the discussions.
• Students will enroll in 3 credits of Anth-E 300, and one credit of Anth-A 395, (Field Experiences in Anthropology). Graduate credit is also available.
• The program is open to all IU students, though students will register through IUPUI for these courses. Students from campuses other than IUPUI will need to become active in the IUPUI registration system to register. This ia a relatively easy process that will be explained to you after acceptance into the program.
• The program has a strong service learning component. Service hour requirements will be approximately 70 hours.

ELIGIBILITY

• Minimum cumulative GPA- 3.0.
  
• Students will be expected to have a general background in the social sciences and/or a general understanding of culture, society, and international relations.
  
• An Indiana State Police criminal background check will be mandatory for all applicants since the community service will involved work with young children.
  
  Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant.
  Students on academic and disciplinary probation during program period are not eligible.

HOUSING

• Students will stay in local homes where they will be provided with breakfast and dinner.

ESTIMATED 2008 COSTS*

• $1590 plus tuition
  This fee includes housing, insurance, and field trips.
• Additional costs include:

  Food/Personal Expenses* $450
  Total estimated* expenses $2625 (includes program fee, airfare, and personal expenses but NOT tuition and visa expenses)
  
  *costs will vary depending on the current exchange rate and individual expenditures. Tuition fees will be affected by your student status at IUPUI.

• IUPUI scholarships, grants and loans applicable to program costs. (Performance scholarships, Guaranteed Tuition certificates, fee courtesies, Indiana Higher Education Awards and awards to children of disabled veterans not applicable.)
