Undergraduate English Language Requirements
If English is not your native language, you must demonstrate proficiency in English before you can be admitted to IUPUI.
IUPUI accepts any one of the following as satisfactory proof of English proficiency:
Testing Options:
- TOEFL: a provisional minimum of 61+ (internet-based version/iBT), 173+ (computer-based version/CBT), or 500+ (paper-based version/PBT) http://www.toefl.org. You must request that official score reports be sent to IUPUI. Use school code 1325.
- IELTS: A grade of 5.5 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), http://www.ielts.org.
- For persons residing in Indiana, results from the IUPUI English as a Second Language (ESL) Placement Test with placement at level G011 or better for students on an F-1 or J-1 visa, or level G009 for students not requiring a student visa.
- SAT Verbal results of 400 (17 English ACT), http://collegeboard.com/sat.
- A GCSE or GCE Ordinary Level subject pass in English Language (grades A-C) from one of the British examinations boards.
- For residents of Japan, a “Pre-First Grade” score on the STEP Eiken.
Study Options:
- Successful completion of ELS Language Centers Intensive Program Level 109. ELS Language Center.
- A grade of C or better in a course equivalent to IUPUI’s English W131, Elementary Composition I, from an accredited college or university in the U.S.
- A bachelor’s or higher degree from a country where English is the predominant native language.
Options based on citizenship:
- Citizen of a country where English is the predominant native language.
- Citizen of a country recognized by IUPUI for TOEFL exemption.
Intensive English Language Study at IUPUI
If you do not meet IUPUI’s English language requirement, you can study English intensively at the ELS Language Centers at IUPUI. ELS Language Centers is authorized to issue I-20s for student visas. To strengthen your visa application to study at ELS, you should submit a complete application (except for English proficiency results) to IUPUI.
Please indicate on your application that you intend to enroll at ELS Language Centers in Indianapolis. If you are found to meet IUPUI academic admission requirements, we will send you a Conditional Letter of Acceptance (CLA) for you to use in your visa application for study at ELS. After you successfully complete ELS intensive Level 109, you can transfer to IUPUI for the next available session. Please contact ELS Language Centers directly for costs and enrollment information.
Semi-intensive English Language Study at IUPUI
IUPUI offers a semi-intensive English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program for admitted students. After arrival, non-native English speakers take the IUPUI EAP Placement Test. If your TOEFL score is below 80 (iBT), 550 (PBT) or 213 (CBT), you will probably need to take one or more supplemental EAP courses to help you develop additional language proficiency. These courses are taken alongside courses required for your academic program and count towards full-time enrollment.
English Proficiency for Graduate Students
If English is not your native language, you must demonstrate proficiency in English before you can be admitted to IUPUI.

To meet IUPUI’s minimum standard for acceptance to any graduate or professional program, you may submit any one of the following as satisfactory proof of English proficiency. However, many graduate programs accept only the TOEFL and require a score significantly higher than the minimum campus standard. Be sure to verify options for demonstrating English proficiency with your program before selecting an alternative to the TOEFL.
- TOEFL score of 550+ (paper version/PBT) or 213+ (computer-based version/CBT) or a provisional minimum of 79+ (internet-based version/IBT). IUPUI’s school code for the TOEFL is 1325
- A grade of 6.0 or higher on the Cambridge International English Language Testing System (IELTS), http://www.ielts.org
- Successful completion of ELS Language Centers Intensive Program Level 109. ELS Language Center.
- For persons residing in Indiana may take the IUPUI English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Placement Test. Placement at level G011 or higher is required for students who will need an I-20 from IUPUI.
- A bachelor’s or higher degree from a country designated by IUPUI as predominantly native-English speaking.
- For residents of Japan, a “Pre-First Grade” score on the STEP Eiken.
Intensive English Language Study at IUPUI
If you cannot meet the English Language Requirement for graduate admission, you may choose to enroll in intensive English language Instruction. ELS Language Centers at IUPUI offer an accredited Intensive English Course at IUPUI that prepares students for graduate level academic study. ELS is also authorized to issue I-20s for student visas. Some IUPUI graduate programs do not require a TOEFL score for students who have successfully completed Intensive Level 112 at the ELS Language Centers. Admission to IUPUI is not required for acceptance into the ELS Language Centers program. Please contact ELS Language Centers directly for costs and enrollment information.
Semi-intensive English Language Study at IUPUI
