Undergraduate English Language Requirements
 

If English is not your native language, you must demonstrate proficiency in English before you can be admitted to IUPUI.

IUPUI accepts any one of the following as satisfactory proof of English proficiency:

Testing Options

  • TOEFL: a provisional minimum of 61+ (internet-based version/iBT), 173+ (computer-based version/CBT),  or 500+ (paper-based version/PBT) http://www.toefl.org. You must request that official score reports be sent to IUPUI. Use school code 1325.
  • IELTS. A grade of 5.5 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), http://www.ielts.org.
  • For persons residing in Indiana, results from the IUPUI English as a Second Language (ESL) Placement Test with placement at level G011 or better for students on an F-1 or J-1 visa, or level G009 for students not requiring a student visa.
  • SAT Verbal results of 400 (17 English ACT).
  • A GCSE or GCE Ordinary Level subject pass in English Language (grades A-C) from one of the British examinations boards.
  • For residents of Japan, a “Pre-First Grade” score on the STEP Eiken.

Intensive English Language Study at IUPUI
If you do not meet IUPUI’s English language requirement, you can study English intensively at the ELS Language Centers at IUPUI. ELS Language Centers is authorized to issue I-20s for student visas. To strengthen your visa application to study at ELS, you should submit a complete application (except for English proficiency results) to IUPUI. Please indicate on your application that you intend to enroll at ELS Language Centers in Indianapolis. If you are found to meet IUPUI academic admission requirements, we will send you a Conditional Letter of Acceptance (CLA) for you to use in your visa application for study at ELS. After you successfully complete ELS intensive Level 109, you can transfer to IUPUI for the next available session. Please contact ELS Language Centers directly for costs and enrollment information.

Semi-intensive English Language Study at IUPUI
IUPUI offers a semi-intensive English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program for admitted students. After arrival, non-native English speakers take the IUPUI EAP Placement Test. If your TOEFL score is below 80 (iBT), 550 (PBT) or 213 (CBT), you will probably need to take one or more supplemental EAP courses to help you develop additional language proficiency. These courses are taken alongside courses required for your academic program and count towards full-time enrollment.
