The INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY (IUSD) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean, appointment to begin on July 1, 2010. IUSD, located on the Indiana University Purdue University- Indianapolis campus (IUPUI), is the only dental school in the state, and one of the oldest in the country. Approximately 700 students are enrolled annually in degree and/or certificate programs in dental assisting, dental hygiene, dentistry and graduate dentistry, with 100 students in each of the four dental classes. The school's outstanding patient care program serves more than 27,000 patients in central Indiana. Wide-ranging services are offered in the school's main facility as well as several clinics in IU Medical Center hospitals and community centers. The centerpiece of IUSD's community dentistry program is Seal Indiana, a mobile program that annually offers preventive care to thousands of children in need throughout the state. The school's multidisciplinary research program is led by IUSD's 41-year-old Oral Health Research Institute, which continues to build upon its international reputation for studies in such areas as fluoride, early caries detection, and caries prevention. About 11,000 alumni of IUSD are pursuing careers throughout the U.S. and in more than 30 other nations. IUPUI is a core campus of Indiana University and a leader in life and health sciences. It is also unique in being IU's premier urban research and academic health sciences campus, comprising 20 schools and academic units granting degrees in over 304 programs from both Indiana University and Purdue University. IUPUI was created in 1969 as a partnership of Indiana and Purdue Universities, and is administered and managed by IU. It is the second largest campus of IU with 30,000 students from all 50 states, including 15% of students of color and nearly 1,000 international students from 122 countries. The Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the School of Dentistry. Responsibilities will include shaping and articulating a vision for the school, enhancing the school's national reputation in education and scholarship, and managing the school's diverse curriculum, personnel matters, and fiscal affairs. Candidates for the dean's position must hold a DDS (or equivalent) or PhD; have a record of academic leadership and experience in managing an educational program; have fund raising experience; have a scholarly record sufficient for appointment as full professor with tenure; have a record of research and competitive extramural funding; have an appreciation and understanding of the challenges and opportunities of dentistry, dental education, and clinical practice; have a record of active participation and membership in professional organizations dedicated to dentistry and dental education. The dean should have a firm understanding of fiscal management and high comfort level in working in decentralized budgeting systems Such as Responsibility Center Management. The school is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and a demonstrated commitment to improving access and the conditions in higher education for underrepresented individuals.
