Title:  Social Movements and Associations

The Indiana University School of Philanthropy invites nominations and applications for a tenured or tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, (10-month appointment) for the upcoming 2013-14 academic year, with expertise in associations and social movements.  Rank will be determined by qualifications.  Candidates from a wide range of disciplines, with expertise in advocacy, civil society, humanitarian aid, and/or public policy will be competitive.  Candidates must have strong disciplinary training combined with a willingness to engage with students and scholars from multiple disciplines sharing the goal of understanding philanthropic behavior.  

Research areas should include one or more of the following: civil society, grass roots organizations, advocacy, human rights and humanitarianism or public policy directed to these areas. It is expected that the candidate's research will extend or complement the School's research programs and initiatives (e.g., Women's Philanthropy Institute, Lake Institute for Faith and Giving).  Successful candidates must also demonstrate evidence of high quality teaching. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. courses.  Course responsibilities may include P212 Philanthropy and Civic Engagement, P301 the History of and Contemporary Approaches to Philanthropy, P524 Civil Society, and/or P524 Civil Society in Comparative Perspective.  Other appropriate courses will be identified depending on the disciplinary background and research methodology. Successful applicants should have a Ph.D. in Area Studies, History, Philanthropic Studies, Political Science, Public Affairs, Sociology or related fields.  Candidates must have strong disciplinary training combined with a willingness to engage with scholars from multiple disciplines sharing the goal of understanding philanthropic behavior.  This position resides within Philanthropic Studies, in the new School of Philanthropy.
  
The School of Philanthropy, located on the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus, was recently approved by the Indiana University Board of Trustees and the Indiana Higher Education Commission.  Building on the Center on Philanthropy's 25 year history, the School values a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding philanthropy with faculty appointees trained in the humanities, social sciences and other fields.  It offers degrees at the Ph.D., masters, and undergraduate level to educate the next generation of scholars and professionals.  The School of Philanthropy research environment includes internal grants to catalyze new research, the Lake Institute on Faith and Giving, the Women's Philanthropy Institute, The Fund Raising School, the Center on Philanthropy Panel Study on Giving and Volunteering, the Payton Philanthropic Studies Library, and the Ruth Lilly Archives. The Center for Service and Learning provides resources for civic engagement and service learning components in courses. The School has an aggressive hiring plan to increase the number of full-time faculty appointments in Philanthropic Studies.
