IUPUI Campus Approach To Engagement

In order to achieve high levels of compliance with the new IUPUI Tobacco-Free Policy which will go into effect August 14, 2006, the campus leadership (chancellor, vice chancellors, deans, and directors) from August 1, 2006, to February 1, 2007, will be called upon to engage IUPUI students, faculty, staff, and visitors to inform the campus community of:

1. The development of a new policy;
2. The importance of complying with the new policy;
3. The resources available to manage behavior in light of the new policy; and
4. The appropriate administrative offices to contact, when necessary, to report violations.

Campus Facilities Services will develop a map that will indicate the campus "hot spots." A "hot spot" is an area on campus where people who smoke have historically congregated to smoke.

City streets within main campus boundary include:

• Wishard Blvd.
• Walnut Street
• University Blvd.
• North Street
• Blackford Street
• Michigan Street
• New York Street
• Limestone Street

The campus vice chancellors and deans will develop and implement a plan to respond to the specific "hot spots" adjacent to the buildings that house their school/administrative unit(s). The plan will include periodic reporting of efforts to engage the campus community and level of satisfaction with compliance.

The Tobacco Free Policy and the approach toward engaging the campus regarding this policy will be evaluated every six months to determine campus and leadership satisfaction. Based upon the results of the evaluation, additional approaches to engagement will be considered.
