Dr. Paul B. Nelson is the Betsy Barton Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the Indiana University Medical Center. Dr. Nelson's clinical interests in addition to general surgery include pituitary and spinal disorders. His research interests encompass the study of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, spinal stenosis and spinal cord injury.
Dr. Nelson received his baccalaureate degree from Pennsylvania State University and medical degree from the Hershey Medical Center at Pennsylvania State University. He completed his neurosurgical residency training at the University of Pittsburgh. He then joined the University of Pittsburgh faculty as Vice Chairman until moving to Indiana University in 1992.
Dr. Nelson is a Diplomat of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and his memberships include the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Society of Neurological Surgeons, the Neurosurgical Society of America (Past President) and the Academy of Neurological Surgeons. In 2003, he served as the Interim President and CEO of the Indiana University School of Medicine's Practice Plan and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. He is a Board Member of Clarian West Hospital and Clarian's Professional Liability Insurance Plan.
Dr. Nelson has received the William s. McEllroy Award from the University of Pittsburgh and the Alumni Fellow Award from Penn State for his contribution to their academic communities. Additionally, he was presented the Glen W. Irwin, Jr. Award at Indiana University for distinguished faculty service.
Born in Iowa City, Iowa, Dr. Paul Nelson is married and has three children.
