Indiana University Medical Center For Skull Base Surgery
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
For patients with skull base tumors, the goal is to preserve function and
provide optimal reconstruction. To accomplish this, the center uses the
most advanced surgical techniques and diagnostic equipment available. Among
the diagnostic and treatment modalities employed are:
- CT with three dimensional reconstruction.
- Spiral CT angiography.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
- Magnetic Resonance Angiography.
- Position Emission Tomography.
- Cerebral Angiography with carotid test occlusion (to determine whether
carotid resection would result in neurologic deficit).
- Embolization of vascular tumors, aneurysms and vascular malformations.
- Somatosensory and brain stem evoked response testing.
- Intra-operative cranial nerve testing.
- Multiview video fluoroscopy and endoscopy.
When surgery is not the treatment of choice, or if adjuvant therapy is recommended,
comprehensive radiation and chemotherapy services are available. Patients
may also be eligible for one of the many clinical trials currently underway
at the Indiana University Medical Center.
