Pallidotomy Surgery

The Indiana University (IU) Pallidotomy Program provides surgical management for the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease in patients who are no longer under adequate medical control. All patients are initially evaluated in the IU Movement Disorder clinic to ensure uniformity of presurgical qualifying factors.

Those patients felt to be appropriate candidates are then referred for sterotactic posteroventral pallidotomy. Extensive intraoperative mapping using microelectrode physiological mapping of the basal ganglia is carried out to maximize odds for improvement and minimize chance of complication.
