Archaeological Evaluations associated with restorations at the

William G. LeDuc Historic Site (21DK62),

1629 Vermillion Street, Hastings, MN

Several alterations in the William G. LeDuc Historic site (21DK62) will be made in the Fall of 2003. This work will require a small amount of archaeological evaluation. Please provide a cost quotation to complete the tasks listed below:

1. In the small, earthen floor area of the basement, at least one shovel test to see if there is cultural material.

a. If cultural material appears, excavation of at least one  1m-x-1 m  excavation unit to culturally sterile earth using 5 cm arbitrary levels where appropriate.

2. In consultation with the architects, determine what areas of the drive to be constructed around the house will require more than minor (defined as approximately 10 centimeters) disturbance below present surface level.

a. Excavate at least one 1m-x-1m unit to culturally sterile earth in any area of major disturbance to a maximum four units for the entire for the entire driveway area.

b. Monitor grading of all driveway areas.

c. Although we do not expect any, should unknown structures or other features appear, be prepared to quickly excavate that feature in the disturbed areas. Additional funding may be requested should such excavations be needed. Consultation with the MHS Project Manager and the Head of the MHS Archaeology Department must occur before such work is undertaken. [Tom and Natascha, will this approach work for you?]

3. Be present during removal of the floorboards from the summer kitchen. The kitchen was not constructed for one year after the occupation of the house, so house debris  outside the door is possible. We wish to have the surface inspected and one small unit, its size appropriate to available space excavated to culturally sterile soil.

4. Excavate at least one shovel test at the approximate location of the “juncture” of plumbing on south side of house.

5. Collection of all artifacts from excavation units is required as is cataloging of these materials so that they may be deposited with the Minnesota Historical Society.

6. Submission of a final report before January 1, 2004.

General:

  • The specific tasks listed in 1-4 above are “guidelines” subject to minor changes at the discretion of the archaeologist(s) assigned to the project. Any major deviations must be discussed with the Head of MHS Archaeology and the Project Manager before they are undertaken.
  • This project requires an archaeological license to be acquired by the selected archaeological contractor.
  • We assume that the selected archaeological contractor will coordinate with the Head of MHS Archaeology and will examine reports of the prior archaeological work done on the LeDuc property as well as other pertinent literature.
  • We estimate that the fieldwork portion of this project can be completed in 8 or fewer person days, barring discovery of unexpected features.
