Historic Forestville
Phase I Archaeological Investigations
In preparation for
placement of new utilities at the Meighen home and store (Tom is this right?) at Historic Forestville, the
Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) requests a Phase I reconnaissance of the
project to assess the presence of any cultural resources in the Area of
Potential Effect.
Phase I should include:
·
at least five soil cores by bucket
auger, Oakfield rod, Giddings Rig or similar coring devices to a depth of at
least 2 meters (MHS Archaeology Department can provide a bucket auger or
Oakfield rod and extension upon request.).
-These probes should be placed
where the project director feels they would be most useful, perhaps in the four
corners and center of the area to be excavated for the utility pit.
·
at least 3 formal 50 cm x 50 cm test
units should be placed along the foundation to
ascertain the presence of any cultural materials and to assess
structural information.
·
preparation of a report detailing
subsurface testing methods, any cultural resources recovered, and any
recommendations for additional work.
Should significant
subsurface cultural resources be found, a plan to assess their significance and
to mitigate their loss should be proposed as a part of the report.
As well:
- the contractor is responsible
for acquiring a license to conduct the project from the Office of the
State Archaeologist and MHS;
- the contractor is
responsible for arranging a curation agreement with MHS Collections
Department. No curation fees will be charged because the project is being
done for an MHS property.
- the contractor may
request the use of laboratory facilities from the Head of the MHS
Archaeology Department.
- the contractor must
coordinate the survey with the Historic Forestville site manager and with
the MHS Historic Sites Division (Tom, put contact
info here.)
- the contractor must
complete the report within one (1) month of the completion of the field
work.
- the contractor must
submit at least one paper copy of the report to each of the following: MHS
Archaeology Department, Site Manager at Historic Forestville, the Historic
Sites Division, the State Historic Preservation Office, and the Office of
the State Archaeologist. At least one electronic (Word or pdf file
preferred) will be submitted to the MHS Archaeology Department.
