The majority of the Community Service student interest groups are housed within the Office of Medical Service-Learning (OMSL) here at the IUSM. This office is directed by Dr. Patricia Keener, Associate Chair of the Department of Pediatrics.
The purpose of the OMSL is to encourage the application of service concepts in coummunity settings while complementing the traditional medical educational curriculum.
The majority of the funding for the community service SIGs comes from the OMSL, but the MSC also contributes funds in order to give medical students the opportunitiy to develop much needed skills in service to others.
The student Volunteer Service Coordinators are appointed by the Medical Student Council and are considered MSC members in addition to their important role in coordinating the OMSL student programs
