Amy Marie Olin was named the first recipient of the Jeffrey C. Darnell Medical Student Geriatrics Achievement Award. Glenda Westmoreland, MD, MPH presented an engraved crystal keepsake to Ms. Olin in
February during a special geriatrics event attended by the founding father of geriatrics at Indiana University, Dr. Jeff Darnell. The award was created by Dr. Darnell's geriatrics colleagues to honor his dedication and 31 years of service to his patients and to IU Geriatrics. It will be presented annually to a medical student to recognize his or her outstanding leadership and service in the care of older adults.
Ms. Olin is a third year medical student who is president of the Student Geriatrics Interest Group. During the award ceremony, Dr. Westmoreland noted, "She has worked tirelessly to organize and participate in events that educate her peers as well as older adults about what geriatrics offers." Her career goal is to become a geriatrician.
In addition to the crystal keepsake, Ms. Olin received a one-year membership to the American Geriatrics Society and an all expense-paid trip to the AGS national meeting in May. A Darnell Award perpetual plaque will hang in the Medical Science Building to commemorate the honored students. Congratulations Amy and thank you, Dr. Darnell!
