Academic Standards Committee - Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Academic Standards Committee Student Members

The primary responsibility of the student members of the Academic Standards Committees is to serve as a liaison between the Medical Student Council and their Academic Standards Committee. Therefore, attendance of every representative at each Medical Student Council meeting and Academic Standards Committee meeting is a necessity in order to properly fulfill the position.
The Academic Standards Committee representatives are responsible for reporting to the MSC regarding the progress of the committee. In the event that the committee does not meet as scheduled (once per month), the representatives are still responsible for contacting and meeting with the committee chair to obtain an update before the next MSC meeting.
Each Academic Standards Committee representative has full voting privileges as a member of their assigned committee and is regarded by the faculty and administration as an equal contributor to the proper functioning of the committee. Therefore, the most highly recommended candidates for the Academic Standards Committees will also be the most proactive students.
Before accepting their position, all Academic Standards Committee candidates must agree to attend the annual MSC Leadership Day in August as well as serve as a member of the interview committee on the subsequent Interview Day during the following year.  Both of these events will take place on a Saturday.

 

Admissions Ambassadors Coordinators: Responsibilities

The Admissions Ambassadors Co-coordinators will work with the Executive Vice-President of the 2nd year class and the Admissions Office to ensure the following activities take place on every medical school applicant interview day:

  1. Student-led tours of the medical center.
  2. Student panel discussion.
  3. Students (MSII, MS III, MSIV) give short presentations to prospective students from 12:15 - 12:45 p.m. during the interview day. They will also be available to answer questions from the prospective students.

Before accepting the position, the candidate agrees to attend each monthly Medical Student Council Meeting and submit periodic updates on the progress of the entity's activities.

The candidate also agrees to attend the annual MSC Leadership Day in August as well as serve as a member of the the interview committee on the subsequent Interview Day during the following year.  Both of these events will take place on a Saturday.

Admissions Committee - Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Student Members of the Admissions Committee

Indiana University School of Medicine values its students and the contributions they make to the School of Medicine. In order to demonstrate its complete commitment to inclusion of student input in all aspects of student life and school administration, it includes two fourth-year medical students on the Admissions Committee and considers their participation invaluable. With the inclusion of medical students its admissions committee, Indiana University School of Medicine joins the large majority of American medical schools that also include students on their admissions committees. The student members of the Admissions Committee at Indiana University School of Medicine are full participants in the admissions and candidate selection process, as well as full voting members on the admissions committee. As members of the School of Medicine student body who have completed the majority of their required academic and clinical training, fourth year medical students are positioned to bring their unique perspective on the challenges that will confront future medical students to the Admissions Committee. To participate in the selection of future medical students, and by extension, future colleagues in the medical profession, is both an honor and a privilege.

CC - Steering Committee - Member Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of a student member of the CCSC is to serve as a liaison between the Medical Student Council and the CCSC. Therefore, attendance of every representative at each monthly MSC meeting and CCSC meeting is a necessity in order to properly fulfill the position.

The CCSC representative is responsible for reporting to the MSC regarding the progress of the committee. In the event that the committee does not meet as scheduled (once per month), the representative is still responsibile for contacting and meeting with the committee chair to obtain an update before the next MSC meeting.The student representative would be expected to make recommendations to the committee and express the students' perspective about the curriculum of any of the four years.

The CCSC representative has full voting priveleges as a member of the committee and is regarded by the faculty and administration as an equal contributor to the proper functioning of the committee. Therefore, the highly recommended candidates will also be the most proactive students.

Before accepting their position, the CCSC candidate agrees to attend the annual MSC Leadership Day in August as well as serve as a member of the the interview committee on the subsequent Interview Day during the following year. Both of these events will take place on a Saturday.

Center Representatives - Responsibilities

Center Representatives serve as liaisons between each of the eight regional medical centers and the Indianapolis campus. A Center Representative from each class is elected by the student population at each regional medical center except Indianapolis. Regional campuses that offer a full third-year curriculum may also elect an MSIII Center Representative.

Center Representatives are required to attend all Medical Student Council meetings via video conference (PolyCom), and they are expected to represent the views, goals, and opinions of their peers at all meetings and Medical Student Council functions as voting members. They are also expected to attend all conference calls held by the Regional Center Liaison assigned to their campus to promote inter-campus communication. Policies and procedures regarding eligibility and election of Center Representatives vary from medical center to medical center and have largely been developed by the student population at each center, resulting in the development of election processes that best fit the unique culture and diversity present at each of the eight regional medical centers.

Competency Teams Liasons - Member Responsibilities

Student members of the Competency Team Liaisons shall act as the primary intermediary between the Medical Student Council and each of the specific Competency Teams.  Competency Team Liaisons may serve both as a Competency Team Liaison and as a member of an individual Competency Team.  Please see the entity description for more information.

Curriculum Council - Clinical Component Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of a student member of the CCCC is to serve as a liaison between the Medical Student Council and the CCCC. Therefore, attendance of every representative at each monthly MSC meeting and CCCC meeting is a necessity in order to properly fulfill the position.

The CCCC representatives are responsible for reporting to the MSC regarding the progress of the committee. In the event that the committee does not meet as scheduled (once per month), the representatives are still responsibile for contacting and meeting with the committee chair to obtain an update before the next MSC meeting.The student representatives would be expected to make recommendations to the committee and express the students' perspective about the 3rd and 4th year curriculums.

The CCCC representative has full voting priveleges as a member of the committee and is regarded by the faculty and administration as an equal contributor to the proper functioning of the committee. Therefore, the highly recommended candidates will also be the most proactive students.

Curriculum Council Basic Science Component - Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of a student member of the CCBS is to serve as a liaison between the Medical Student Council and the CCBS. Therefore, attendance of every representative at each monthly MSC meeting and CCBS meeting is a necessity in order to properly fulfill the position.

The CCBS representatives are responsible for reporting to the MSC regarding the progress of the committee. In the event that the committee does not meet as scheduled (once per month), the representatives are still responsibile for contacting and meeting with the committee chair to obtain an update before the next MSC meeting.The student representatives would be expected to make recommendations to the committee and express the students' perspective about the first and second year curricula.

The CCBS representative has full voting priveleges as a member of the committee and is regarded by the faculty and administration as an equal contributor to the proper functioning of the committee. Therefore, the highly recommended candidates will also be the most proactive students.

Before accepting their position, the CCBS candidates agree to attend the annual MSC Leadership Day in August as well as serve as a member of the the interview committee on the subsequent Interview Day during the following year. Both of these events will take place on a Saturday.

First Year Class President - Responsibilities and Duties

The First Year Class President Shall...

  • Serve as the spokesperson for the 1st year student body and be responsible for the proper communication between the Medical Student Council and the 1st year class.
  • Organize Class Officer meetings at least once a month and ensure the presence of the other 1st year class officers at the monthly Medical Student Council meetings (please see the announcements page on this website for dates of the MSC meetings). 
  • Coordinate the annual medical instrument sale and distribution of purchased instruments.

In addition to these responsibilities all 1st year officers shall...

  • Collaborate with the Regional Center Liaisons to assist them in providing pertinent information to and soliciting relevant concerns from the Center Representative at each of the nine regional medical education centers.
  • Assist with the events sponsored by the Medical Student Council, including elections.

First Year Class Social Chairperson - Responsibilities and Duties

The First Year Class Social Chairperson Shall...

  • Organize periodic social functions for the first year class.
  • Work with the other class social chairpersons to organize social functions that encourage participation of multiple classes and campuses.
  • Work with the first year class treasurer to ensure fiscal responsibility in the development of and payment for social events.
