Website Development Team: Eligibility and Selection

Selection Process
All current students of IUSM at all years are eligible to apply. Application is available from the Interview Day module, the day of which will be announced around 2 months in advance each year. One or two students are selected each year through an interview by current WDT members.
Appointment Period
Minimal appointment is 1 year, but preferably 2 years. New members are instructed to perform routine tasks throughout the year. The main task of second- or higher-year members is to instruct and guide the new members, as well as carry out more technically advanced tasks.
Technical Requirements
The tasks of WDT as a whole will require various levels of technical proficiency, ranging from basic web navigating skills to familiarity with database programming. However, WDT is aware that it is not realistic to expect all members to be proficient in every task, and it is working towards diminishing its technical demands on future members as of 2010. The minimum proficiency that is asked of any member is basic web navigation. It is encouraged, although not required, to be familiar in the following areas: HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL.

Website Development Team: Entity Description

The Website Development Team consists of IUSM students, and we maintain the Medical Student Council's website (this site) and websites operated by MSC under the www.iupui.edu/~mscstaff/ account, as well as answer the web-based needs of council members and student group leaders. A common misconception is that we are also in charge of Oncourse. While we do not have technical control over non-MSC websites, we serve to communicate technical issues encountered by students to the school's IT Department through our IT Coordinator, Myrna Gray.

Website Development Team: Responsibilities

Liaison between medical students and IT Department of IUSM
As the first contact for medical students to discuss web-based issues, WDT actively seeks technical issues from the student body, proposes solutions, and keeps a professional relationship with Myrna Gray, the IT Coordinator at IUSM. This task requires a degree of technical awareness, an open mind for problem-solving, and willingness to work with a larger, administrative-level group of personnel.
Maintenance of the MSC Website (this site)
The main task is updating MSC members each year after the results of Interview Day come out. This requires no more technical skills than navigating Oncourse and answering course evaluations. Secondly, WDT is the primary response team for technical difficulties encountered by MSC executives on this website. This requires very basic familiarity with the Drupal platform, which is well-documented online. Lastly, to a lesser extent, Senior Developers of WDT respond to the requests of council members to implement new programs on this website.
An MSC Website operation manual is provided to all WDT members. Basic experience with HTML will be helpful, but not required for developers. Familiarity with PHP is desired for a senior developer.
Maintenance of MSC-operated Websites
MSC operates several websites under the domain of www.iupui.edu/~mscstaff/ for the purpose of announcement and on-line registrations of MSC events. Events with supportive websites include the following:

Before MSC Executive Council announces the opening of an event for registration, WDT is called to update the corresponding website and database of registrants. WDT is also responsible for answering any technical issue raised during registration. As of 2013, this task requires basic familiarity with PHP and MySQL to troubleshoot the websites. An operator's manual will be provided to all WDT members to help navigate the structures of the websites.
