OSR - Eligibility and Member Selection

The deans of the medical school appoint students to the position of OSR. Interested students must complete an application (which can be found on the MSC website) and participate in an interview with the medical student council (MSC) on MSC Interview Day in the spring.  Interviews are offered to all highly interested applicants (those who rank interest in becoming an OSR member as first or second on their application), and offered to other students on an application-by-application basis.

Each year, there is a representative from the second (MSII), third (MSIII), and fourth (MSIV) classes, for a total of three OSR reps at all times. The position is held by each student for a total of three years. Those interested in a position should apply in the spring before the start of the next academic year.

OSR - Entity Description

The OSR is a national organization that is the student branch of the AAMC (American Association of Medical Colleges).  It represents the undergraduate medical student body to the academic medicine community.  Every accredited medical school in the U.S. appoints representatives to this group, and the OSR is responsible for bringing medical student opinion to the AAMC.  The administrative board of the OSR meets with AAMC leaders in Washington, D.C. several times per year, and the OSR representatives gather annually at national and regional meetings.  The AAMC itself is the organization responsible for running the licensing exams for physicians (the Boards), the match program for residency, and many other things that are part of becoming a physician.

In addition to contacting IUSMs student representatives, you can also access the websites listed below:

OSR - Responsibilities

An OSR representative's main goal is to act as a liaison between his/her school and the Association of American Medical Colleges / OSR at a national level. This includes listening to colleagues suggestions and complaints about all issues, gathering information from the AAMC and distributing it to fellow classmates, and also communicating with OSR reps from across the country. There are annual national and regional meetings where OSR reps gather to exchange ideas and to learn about new events and issues occurring in medical education.

OSR representatives are encouraged to attend the monthly MSC meetings in order to stay up to date with events occurring on campus conducted by the Medical Student Council, School of Medicine news, and the concerns of the elected representatives of the student population at Indiana University School of Medicine.
