Academic Standards Committee - Eligibility and Selection

Eligibility and Selection of Students to Serve on the Academic Standards Committee

Students will be selected by the dean to sit on each Academic Standards Committee.
Candidates eligible to become members of the Academic Standards Committee are those students who are in good academic standing. The candidates selected to sit on the Academic Standards Committee will be a full member of the committee starting the spring after applying through the spring of the following year.
Candidates are interviewed and preference by the interview steering committee during Interview Day and presented by way of written recommendations to the Medical Student Council President and Vice-President. The President and Vice-President carefully consider the recommendations of the interview steering committee and assess the characteristics of all candidates for the position prior to making a recommendation for committee appointment to the Dean of the School of Medicine.
Preferred candidates will be recommended for each committee by the President and Vice-President to the Dean. Alternate candidates will also be recommended in the rare event that a chosen candidate is unable to fulfill his or her responsibilities on the committee for any reason.

Academic Standards Committee - Entity Description

The Academic Standards Committee (ASC) is charged to develop and implement a systemic evaluation process for the components and outcomes of the medical education program. The ASC will review each IUSM course/learning unit, competency curricula, and student performance data at specified intervals to enhance the ability of the School to monitor and evaluate the educational program and make informed decisions to enhance the curriculum. After careful outcomes analysis, using national norms for learner performance as a frame of reference when possible and data from the assessment of learners and from faculty, the ASC will acknowledge exemplars, note deficiencies and make recommendations for the improvement of the objectives, content, pedagogy, design, learner assessments, and evaluation strategies being used by the components of the curriculum through regular reports made to the Curriculum Council Steering Committee. ASC also hears grade appeals after they have been reviewed by department chairs to make a recommendation to the Executive Associate Dean for Educational Affairs.

Academic Standards Committee - Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Academic Standards Committee Student Members

The primary responsibility of the student members of the Academic Standards Committees is to serve as a liaison between the Medical Student Council and their Academic Standards Committee. Therefore, attendance of every representative at each Medical Student Council meeting and Academic Standards Committee meeting is a necessity in order to properly fulfill the position.
The Academic Standards Committee representatives are responsible for reporting to the MSC regarding the progress of the committee. In the event that the committee does not meet as scheduled (once per month), the representatives are still responsible for contacting and meeting with the committee chair to obtain an update before the next MSC meeting.
Each Academic Standards Committee representative has full voting privileges as a member of their assigned committee and is regarded by the faculty and administration as an equal contributor to the proper functioning of the committee. Therefore, the most highly recommended candidates for the Academic Standards Committees will also be the most proactive students.
Before accepting their position, all Academic Standards Committee candidates must agree to attend the annual MSC Leadership Day in August as well as serve as a member of the interview committee on the subsequent Interview Day during the following year.  Both of these events will take place on a Saturday.
