West Lafayette Survival Guide

Welcome to the Indiana University School of Medicine-Lafayette on the campus of Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.

For the next two years, your life will revolve around a tiny hallway in the basement of Lynn Hall. The Lecture Halls, rooms B-197 and B-193 of Lynn hall, provides comfortable seats with a good view of the professor. Most of the textbooks required for the courses are located in the back of both rooms along with accessible computers. Right next door, in B-189, is the Gross Anatomy Lab which has 24 hour access. Further down the hallway is a “private” office/medical student lounge with a refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, & coffee maker for student use between classes or after hours.

Key Points

Combination lockers and mailboxes are provided by the school. On the opposite end of the hall is the student lounge, shared by the Veterinary students. There is a Coke machine, tables, chairs, and a microwave.
Computers are helpful at home, but they are not mandatory. Many computers are readily available in our rooms in the basement, reserved solely for medical students. There is also a large computer lab in the library upstairs to which we have 24 hour access.
Do not buy textbooks until after consulting a second year student or attending class. This way you save a lot of money. Some second years may have books to lend or sell you. Also all the books for class are available in limited numbers in the back of the room. It would be wise to look through them and talk to second years about what they used before spending a bunch of money on books.
First year students are required to purchase medical supplies which usually run $500-$700. Keep this in mind when budgeting for the year.
Be prepared to join an intramural team. We are very active here and try to keep stress levels low.
The first week of classes you will select a class representative, medical student council representative, a computer consultant and an AMA representative. There are many other positions that perform various tasks. It’s not a lot of work; don’t be afraid to volunteer for them.
