How to Apply to the Graduate Program

We are very pleased that you are interested in the Ph.D. program in Microbiology and Immunology.  The Department participates in the Indiana University School of Medicine BioMedical Gateway (IBMG) Program, which offers an open-enrollment/gateway system that provides a shared first-year experience for all Ph.D. students. Students have the freedom to explore research areas through three rotations in laboratories across programs and choose entry into any of the ten Ph.D. programs at the conclusion of the first academic year. The open-enrollment system enhances the community of graduate students by offering a shared collaborative culture, a vital component of today’s interdisciplinary nature of biomedical science research.

A strong background in molecular and/or cellular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or related fields is recommended for applicants. Undergraduate courses should include basic biology, genetics, general and organic chemistry, physics, calculus, and biochemistry. The General Test of the GRE is required. Applications should be submitted by January 15 for matriculation in the fall semester. Students are selected on the basis of undergraduate grades, test scores, the personal statement, research interests, letters of recommendation, and interviews with faculty members. Information on applying to the gateway program can be found at http://www.medicine.iu.edu/~gradschl/.
