Helpful Points

  • Form Advisory Committee by the end of the first year, preferably by the beginning of the summer.  
  • Take G505 Responsible Conduct of Research (and G865/G817) in the second year if not already taken in first year.
  • Take J830 Seminar in Microbiology for three semesters beginning fall of second year
  • Teach J210 Microbiology usually in second year.
  • Take Qualifying Examination within 25 months of entry for Ph.D. candidates; 18 months for combined degree students.
  • Form Research Committee immediately after satisfactory completion of Qualifying Examination.   The Research Committee must be approved by the Graduate School at least 8 months prior to the thesis examination.
  • Advancement to Candidacy Form, including a summary of the proposed research, must be approved by the Graduate School at least 8 months prior to the thesis examination.
  • Students should reach 90 credit hours as expeditiously as possible.   This usually means taking 12 credits fall and spring and 6 in the summer.   After 90 credits are achieved, they can sign up fall and spring for 1 credit of G901 and be considered full time.   Note: a student can only register for G901 for six semesters.
  • Combined degree students can transfer in 30 credits from their medical school courses.
  • Submission of a manuscript based on the dissertation research in a primary journal in the field is required.
  • Prior to writing the thesis, information on all aspects related to the writing should be obtained from the IUPUI Graduate Office.
