Description and summary of research focus of the laboratory:
Dr. Cornetta's laboratory is interested in the use of gene transfer in the treatment of human malignancies. The laboratory is particulary interested in the development and use of retroviral and lentiviral (HIV-1) based vectors. Three areas of active research are being explored. The first aims to efficiently transduce human bone marrow progenitor cells from cancer patients with retroviral vectors expressing drug resistance genes. Their second area of research aims to develop tumor vaccines for breast cancer and leukemia that utilize vector technology. Lastly, the Indiana University Vector Production Facility, a designated NIH National Gene Vector Laboratory, is charged with generating clinical grade vector for human gene therapy trials. Research in this area aims to optimize and understand gene transduction gene expression, with emphasis on potential clinical applications.
