The goal of the Cancer Biology Training Program (CBTP) is to provide an interdisciplinary training environment for predoctoral and postdoctoral students who wish to pursue a career in cancer research. CBTP faculty are members of the Indiana University Cancer Center (IU Cancer Center), the matrix organization for an extensive range of cancer efforts and activities. Faculty preceptors represent the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Cellular & Integrative Physiology, Medicine, Microbiology & Immunology, Medical & Molecular Genetics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Surgery, and Urology. Ongoing NIH, ACS, and DOD funded research programs are focused in Molecular Carcinogenesis, Hematopoiesis, Experimental Therapeutics, and Hormone & Reproductive Oncology. The CBTP is designed to enhance the training received in any individual laboratory or department. Trainees are exposed to a broad range of cancer-related research encompassing both basic and clinical aspects of the disease. CBTP predoctoral students fulfill the requirements of their individual basic science departments and complete the Cancer Biology minor. CBTP trainees in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology have the option of completing the Cancer focus area. Postdoctoral and predoctoral CBTP trainees attend both a basic science and a clinical seminar series, cosponsored by the IU Cancer Center, and participate and present in the monthly meeting of trainees and in the IU Cancer Center Annual Cancer Research Day. Support for training predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows is provided by a grant from the National Cancer Institute, as well as funds from the DeVault Endowment, and the IU Cancer Center. These CBTP stipends are available on a competitive basis for trainees conducting their research in the laboratory of a CBTP preceptor.
