Dr. Unverzagt has research interests in clinical assessment of memory loss and dementia and in the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors for mild cognitive impairment (MCI/CIND) and Alzheimer disease. He has adapted cognitive and clinical assessment techniques for use in cross-cultural studies in Nigeria, Kenya (two locations), Jamaica, and China. He has also been involved in the longitudinal assessment of large kindreds affected with early onset Alzheimer disease, Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker disease (an inherited prion diesase), and multi-system tauopathy. Dr. Unverzagt is also part of one of the largest randomized controlled trials of a psychological intervention ever undertaken, the ACTIVE (Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent Vital Elderly) Trial. Started in 1996, this is a multi-center trial of the effectiveness of cognitive training programs in forestalling decline in activities of daily living. Over 2800 subjects have been followed longitudinally in this project.
