The present research in the laboratory focuses on studying how the calcium channel subunit mutation leads to defects of neurotransmission, signal transduction and gene expression in mutant mouse stargazer. Multiple approaches at systemic, cellular and molecular levels are used to track the biological effects of the primary mutation on the brain morphology during development, the regulation of synaptic transmission, the expression of neurotrophic factor, and subsequent phenotype expression.

The other line of my research interest is to study the function and regulation of growth factors in the retina, especially roles of neurotrophins in physiological as well as pathological conditions, neuroprotective mechanism, and pharmacological use of neurotrophic factors in treatment of diseases.

Experimental methods include neuroanatomy, genetics, immunocytochemistry, molecular biology, surgery, and electrophysiology with mouse cross-breeding, genotyping and phenotyping; in vivo animal stereotaxic surgery and chronic brain infusion; behavioral analysis of motor coordination and learning and memory; systemic field potential recordings; light and electron microscopic morphology analysis; in vitro neuronal manipulation of gene regulation and signaling pathway; protein analysis by western blot, ELISA and immunocytochemistry; HPLC and neurotransmitter assays; molecular biology with northern, southern, PCR, sub-cloning, in situ hybridization, RNase protection assay, real time PCR, and gene transfer.
