Dr. Gehlert’s work centers around understanding the roles of neuropeptides in the brain. Using histochemical, biochemical and molecular methodology, the regulation of peptides and their receptors are studied. Studies include both in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo techniques. Current projects center around substance P, neuropeptide Y and corticotropin releasing factor. These peptides have been shown to affect appetite, mood and memory through distinct neuronal pathways. Studies in the laboratory are directed toward understanding the neuronal pathways and receptors involved in these responses.
