3. Directors’ Reports:
University Library. No report.
Law Library. Judith Anspach reported that Dragomir Cosanici
had left and a search is in process to fill that vacancy. Steven Miller is a new librarian. The law librarians are doing much more
teaching this semester than in the past.
The
Dental Library. Jan Cox reported on expanded document delivery and an increased involvement in the classes and problem based learning of the dental school.
Medical Library. Carole Gall announced the EndNote classes coming up. Nancy Eckerman reported that there is an evaluation of the utilization of library space taking place and there may be some changes regarding space allocation coming in the near future.
4. Committee Reports:
The IUPUI Librarians P & T are preparing to review four dossiers next week. The committee is Brenda Burk, Richard Humphreys, Randi Stocker, Wendell Johnting, Carole Gall.
Standards Committee.
Todd Daniels-Howell reported on the group (referred to as the Brunch
Bunch) that is addressing the campus mandate to define excellence as used in
promotion and tenure considerations. The
members of the group are: Todd, Nancy
Eckerman, Rick Ralston, Randi Stocker, Miriam Murphy, Chris Long, and Peggy
Richwine. The group has been meeting
weekly since early Spring to not only define excellence but to give specific
details of expectations for satisfactory, beyond satisfactory and excellence in
performance, service, and professional development. Arriving at a consensus on each of these
criteria and examples for each one has been a tedious process but the product
of this work should give the IUPUI Library Faculty a good working document that
will help candidates, supervisors, and promotion and tenure considerations some
real guidelines. The group anticipates
having the document ready for presenting to the IUPUI Library Faculty by late
October. The goal is to have this
document ready to implement for Fall 2008 P & T considerations.
Indiana University Academic Handbook revisions. Jennifer Hehman reported on this ongoing
activity. Revision to the present wording
in the IU Academic Handbook regarding IU Librarians has been proposed by a
group of Bloomington Librarians speaking on behalf of all IU Librarians. There is concern that the proposed wording is
not representing the interests of IUPUI librarians. Jennifer has worked on revising the wording
to meet the needs of this campus but would like others to help her.
IULFC. Rick Ralston is the secretary of the Indiana University Library Faculty Council for 2007-08. The first meeting is October 2 via polycom.
5. Old Business: none.
a. Discussion: What is the role of the IUPUI Library Faculty professional association?
The discussion was wide ranging and included how we interface with technology and how the university administration perceives our role. One statement was that our role has not changed. Many see our role defined in the traditional management of print materials. As our primary professional activity becomes managing and educating users on electronic resources that are confused with Google and the Internet then we must clarify our professional role. This organization is primarily a governing body for the IUPUI library faculty and is to ensure our position in the academy. The revised standards will be vital in defining our position.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:55 am.
Respectfully submitted by Peggy Richwine, Secretary.
