IUPUI Library Faculty Meeting
Minutes
November 9, 2005
In attendance: Jim Baldwin,
President Elaine Skopelja called the meeting to order at 9:25 a.m. Attendees introduced themselves.
The guest speaker was Patricia Steele, Interim Dean of
University Libraries. She discussed the
initiative of
Agenda and Old Minutes
Two corrections to the old minutes were noted without discussion. Old minutes were approved.
There is no program yet for the next meeting, February 15. Elaine announced that ideas are welcome.
Directors’ Reports
University Library
The Information Commons has new seating. The
More than 60,000 ebooks have been
obtained through the Library Fund of Indianapolis. The vendors are NetLibrary
(with
Libraries and the campus should generally assume that the deficit will be comparable to last year. The details of actual impact are still unclear.
Regarding pay-for-print, other units want to try to harmonize with the Medical Library and University Library with some flexibility.
Regarding decreased Medical Library, the nursing school is being overrun by medical students and the law school is experiencing the same. Pursuant to new rules, non-nursing students will no longer be able to print. Nancy Eckerman told nursing students printing will be $0.01 per page. However, David Lewis said it will probably be higher.
Law Library
The Law Library has posted several vacancies. Applicants should be directed to the Human Resources website.
Dentistry Library
None.
Medical Library
The new copiers will not be coin operated, but due to problems with the card readers, the library still has both.
Fran Brahmi announced the first
issue of a new publication, Reflections, by the
Carole Gall announced that the Medical and University Libraries are participating in the Spirit and Place program, including one on November 14 at the Medical Library.
Committee Reports
Chris Long announced that the first organizational meeting of the Promotion and Tenure Committee is scheduled for next month.
Jennifer Hehman announced that the Faculty Affairs Committee is looking at the issue of intellectual property (perhaps in concert with the Distance Education Committee and the Academic Affairs Committee). Please send issues and concerns to Jennifer. One issue is developing a new policy, either on a campuswide basis or with individual faculty. Several librarians are involved and will work with law professor Kenny Crews.
