Two corrections to the old minutes were noted without discussion.  Old minutes were approved.

There is no program yet for the next meeting, February 15.  Elaine announced that ideas are welcome.

Directors’ Reports

University Library

The Information Commons has new seating.  The Writing Center on the 4th floor will move into the Commons for the fall.  Additional funding will allow the library to enhance space next summer.

More than 60,000 ebooks have been obtained through the Library Fund of Indianapolis.  The vendors are NetLibrary (with Marion County), Ebrary, and Books 24/7 (technical titles).  The greatest usage is by medical students studying for the Boards; #1 is a surgery review text.

Libraries and the campus should generally assume that the deficit will be comparable to last year.  The details of actual impact are still unclear.

Regarding pay-for-print, other units want to try to harmonize with the Medical Library and University Library with some flexibility.

Regarding decreased Medical Library, the nursing school is being overrun by medical students and the law school is experiencing the same.  Pursuant to new rules, non-nursing students will no longer be able to print.  Nancy Eckerman told nursing students printing will be $0.01 per page.  However, David Lewis said it will probably be higher.

Law Library

Miriam Murphy announced that the Law Library is preparing to draft a strategic plan and asked others for examples of good ones.

Miriam announced that she is program chair for the 2006 Ohio Regional Association of Law Libraries and asked for program ideas.

The Law Library has posted several vacancies.  Applicants should be directed to the Human Resources website.

Dentistry Library

None.

Medical Library

The new copiers will not be coin operated, but due to problems with the card readers, the library still has both.

Fran Brahmi announced the first issue of a new publication, Reflections, by the School of Medicine.  It is like Genesis (IUPUI campus).

Carole Gall announced that the Medical and University Libraries are participating in the Spirit and Place program, including one on November 14 at the Medical Library.

Committee Reports

Chris Long announced that the first organizational meeting of the Promotion and Tenure Committee is scheduled for next month.

Jennifer Hehman announced that the Faculty Affairs Committee is looking at the issue of intellectual property (perhaps in concert with the Distance Education Committee and the Academic Affairs Committee).  Please send issues and concerns to Jennifer.  One issue is developing a new policy, either on a campuswide basis or with individual faculty.  Several librarians are involved and will work with law professor Kenny Crews.

Old Business

None.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Debra Denslaw, Secretary
