Library Director’s Reports:

University Library—David Lewis

University Library is in the process of implementing MetaSearch, which searches across database resources.  University Library has a campus level license.  Other campus libraries can participate under the license.  It is envisioned that MetaSearch will replace a portion of University Library’s home page.  E-shelf, a  MetaSearch feature, is used to create a reading list on Oncourse.  It is envisioned that this implementation will eventually move the library out of the electronic reserves business.

University Library has acquired a general academic collection of electronic books through e-Library.

University Library in partnership with Indianapolis Marion County Public Library has an Indianapolis Foundation grant to fund the digitizing of Indianapolis history documents.  They plan to roll out the project within a few months.

It is anticipated that the Herron School of Art Library will be moved during Spring 2005.

Dean Lewis encouraged everyone to submit letters of support for the NIH Open Access proposal.  He also encouraged attendees to support INSPIRE, which depends on receipt of a $1.25 million dollar legislative appropriation.  INSPIRE serves as a key resource for the campus as well as the state.

Law Library—Judith Anspach

Miriam Murphy and Judith Anspach are working on a grant to be submitted to the Indianapolis Foundation.  They are seeking funding for their Pro-Se patron service initiative.  The Pro-Se Task Force partners are The Ruth Lilly Law Library, Indianapolis Marion County Public Library, Indiana State Library, Indiana Supreme Court Library, and the Marion County Law Library.  A brochure outlining services and workshops are planned.

Dragomir Cosanici and Chris Long received a grant to study Indiana Supreme Court decision citation frequency and practices.  The resulting paper has been submitted for publication.

They will be teaching Advanced Legal Research online.  This is the law school’s  first online course.

Medical Library—Elaine Skopelja

The People Mover between Riley Hospital and the Medical Library will be closed for a while.  The Medical School will be implementing a very strict security access system in the near future.  The card-access and buzz-in access only times will begin at 6:00 pm all week long, including weekends.   Access to the library’s upper floors will require an access card.  Computer open access will be limited to the first floor of the library.   Jagtags will work for access purposes.

Sue London received NLM grant funding for her Conscious Works project in the amount of  $40,000.  Sue will develop a database.

Peggy Richwine has submitted a grant proposal to the Indianapolis Foundation seeking funding for InGoLocal.  The funds would be used to hire people to input Indiana service provider data.  Although the information will be hosted on the NLM server, Indiana people are responsible for the data input.

Committee Reports:

Polly Boruff-Jones, IUPUI Representative to the Indiana University Library Faculty Council (IULFC), reported that the prior year’s reports are being reviewed in preparation for committee charges.  The Council hopes to get them out in the near future.  Sue London and Kevin Petsche are also members of the Council.
