Miriam
Murphy reported that the name of the new law library (Ruth Lilly Law Library)
is causing some confusion with the Ruth Lilly Medical Library; law library
staff would be happy to give tours of the new facility; cataloging work for the
new location has been completed. In
connection with INDIGO, the groups coordinating document collections for Ohio,
Michigan, and Indiana met last week.
The oversight body has requested that collection development policies be
drawn up and will be randomly visiting Web sites to evaluate compliance with
information requirements. For selected
publications, it is now possible to substitute electronic documents for paper.

Presentation
on Virtual Reference at IUPUI University Library (Brenda Burk)
Summary: University Library received a grant from
Ameritech to support the development of Virtual Reference. The advantage of the live format is that it
is possible to send documents directly to the patron. Challenges to effective
use include staffing, training, promotion of the concept to users, technical
support, and ongoing funding.
Librarians need good chatting skills to use this tool effectively; an additional
downside is the loss of verbal cues in communicating with patrons. Confidentiality of transcripts is also an
issue that has been negotiated with the vendor. Transcript content can be used to develop FAQ lists for the
library web site. The future of this
reference format includes the development of voice-over and video. The presentation was followed by a
demonstration of the Virtual Reference software.
