Boruff-Jones
greeted the members, thanked the librarians of the Law School for providing the
room and refreshments, and introduced the guest speaker, Daniel Callison, of
the School of Library and Information Science.
Callison
spoke briefly about the history of the SLIS programs at IUPUI. As of 2000, the Master of Information
Science (MIS) will be offered only at the Bloomington campus. The Master of
Library Science (MLS) and the MLS/Specialization in Library Technology
Management will be offered at IUPUI. A
dual degree (MLS/MIS) will also be offered at the Bloomington campus. The IUPUI program will be expanding, including
offering Friday evening and Saturday classes.
The goal is to attain full ALA accreditation for the IUPUI program. SLIS
at IUPUI currently has around 250 students.
They are working with students who started the MIS at IUPUI to finish
their course requirements. Up until
now, IUPUI has had no full time SLIS faculty.
Although Callison is now the only full time faculty member, they hope to
add five more in the next year. They
hope to recruit faculty that have attained the Ph.D., are student/teaching oriented,
are willing to work with a variety of distance education formats, and already
have some experience in the field.
The
membership roster was circulated for attendance and corrections.
Randi
Stocker was elected as alternate to IULFC.
She replaces Amy Cavanaugh.
Boruff-Jones
called for volunteers to fill out the remaining committee slots.
