Announcements
Miriam Murphy noted that the original intent of IU-Link was to share online resources across the IU system. There is concern that IU-Link funding could be perceived as a "competitor" with the funding for the INSPIRE system, which is important to public library systems such as IMCPL. The value of IU-Link could be promoted to the legislature by extending participation to a wider (statewide) consortium of state-supported academic libraries. Please give feedback to campus library directors regarding expanded library involvement in the IU-Link project.
Approval of Minutes for November 29, 2000
Questions were raised regarding details recorded for the University Library Faculty Council report (in the Committee and Representative Reports section). A request was made to replace the initials “ILFC” with “IULFC”, and provide clarification of faculty librarians’ organizations referenced in the discussion.
The November minutes will be presented for final approval at the next meeting.
Noting discussion in the minutes regarding dossiers leaving the IUPUI campus, Humphrey raised the additional point that dossiers currently go to the Dean of Libraries before reports are presented by the P & T committee. He asked whether this procedure should be changed so that the Dean will see the dossiers after the work of the P&T committee is complete.
Directors’ Reports
University Library (Stocker for David Lewis):
University Library announced a new team structure yesterday (February 27). Librarians will be re-organized into four liaison cluster areas: Science and Engineering, Liberal Arts, Professional Schools, and University College. A job search has been announced for two librarians.
Michelle Fiander has obtained an Ameritech grant to purchase software and provide training to support virtual reference services. Training will be provided next week for campus library staff. More opportunities for training will be provided over the next few months. Last week Michelle demonstrated the virtual reference software to the Council of Head Librarians.
Law Library (Murphy for Bailey): Murphy has been in her position as Associate Director of the library for six months. She and other staff of the Law Library are working hard to prepare for the upcoming move to the new Law School building. Bids for the move have been received from four professional library movers. Offers of help for the move from staff at other campus libraries would be appreciated. Law library catalogers have discussed adding new “collections” to be employed in the new library.
The Ruth Lilly Medical Library, the Dental Library and the Columbus Library were not represented for the directors’ report.
Committee and Representative Reports
University Libraries Faculty Organization (ULFO) No report
Indiana University Faculty Council (IULFC) Report by Stokes
IULFC hasn’t met since November 9; there will be a meeting in March. Vania Goodwin and Cindy Stokes are the two representatives. Brenda Burk will be the new alternate to replace Alan Barclay. Brenda joins Pat McWilliams and May Jafari, who were previously selected as alternates.
Old Business
None given.
New Business
Boruff-Jones – University Library is interested in finding what resource people are available on campus regarding citation management software packages such as Reference Manager, ProCite or EndNotes. Thomson Scientific (ISI) has bought competitors’ products so that this firm owns all three software products.
McWilliams and Hoyt – both use ProCite extensively. The ProCite is the most “powerful” product of the ISI family of citation software.
Randi – we should post a question to the IULF list, asking for people with experience with citation management software.
Hoyt – there is a large ProCite users listserv sponsored by the IU system (Mark Day is the list owner).
Panel Discussion
SIRSI panel discussion with Phyllis Davidson, Gary Charbonneau, and Vania Goodwin.
The next IUPUI library faculty meeting will be held in the Law School Faculty Room at the Law School library on April 18 from 9AM to 11AM.
Respectfully submitted,
Randall Halverson, Secretary
