Approval
of Minutes
8
March 2000 Minutes:
A
typo was noted under the last heading: “Speaker”. The sentence should read: “Suzanne Thorin, Ruth Lilly University
Dean of University Libraries, spoke with the faculty about partnering among the
IU Libraries, as well as with outside entities.”
27
April 2000 Minutes:
S.
Staum-Kuniej -- Noted that she had attended the meeting.
A needed
correction was noted within the Indiana University Library Faculty Council
(IULFC) report. The sentence now reads
“Currently the position of chair rotates by campus, leading untenured
librarians to serve as P&T chair.”
The sentence should read “Currently
the position of chair rotates by campus, leaving the option for untenured
librarians to serve as P & T chair.”
J. Hehman commented that the applicable policy
has been changed. Non-tenured
librarians will be able to serve on the committee, but will not be eligible to
serve as chair. Hehman also noted that
the subsequent statement in the minutes regarding a suggestion to change the
grievance procedure for librarians would mean that we would no longer be following
the “Red Book.”
A
motion to accept both sets of minutes was made by T. Daniels-Howell, with
second given by N. Eckerman. Approval
was unanimous.

J. Hehman
– There is a need to review statements pertaining to librarians going up for
tenure in the Academic Handbook – the general academic policy document
applying to all campuses. Policies
provided by the Academic Handbook were developed in 1972, are out-of-date
and conflict with policies given in the “Red Book”, a newer document
elaborating P&T policy for librarians.
Academic Handbook policies for librarians need to be updated by
the IULFC Bylaws committee to reflect current practice. Policy revisions to the Academic Handbook
must ultimately be submitted to the UFC faculty governance committee for final
approval.
