Announcements

  1. Sara Hook (Dentistry) presented Memorial resolutions on behalf of Ms. Elizabeth J. "Libby" Halpin and Mr. Mark E. Fitzgerald who were killed in tragic automobile accident over the summer. The group remembered them in a moment of silence.
  2. Jule Fore reminded all of the upcoming ASIS meeting.
  3. SLA will be in Indianapolis June 1-8, 1998 with an expected attendance of 4-5,000. Contact K. Kaneshiro if you are interested in helping with hospitality or planning.

Director's Reports

Dental -- A new cataloger, Jan Cox formerly of INCOLSA, has been hired. The School of Dentistry has begun problem based learning which will, hopefully, begin to include the library in a larger way.

Medical -- There is currently no collaboration with the Clarion Health Library as they are experimenting with purchasing their own electronic journal collection. The cooperative aspect of the University Library electronic journal grant from The Indianapolis Foundation has allowed the addition of some electronic journals to the Ovid system.

University Library-- no report

Law -- no report

Committee and Representative Reports

The IULFC will meet on Oct. 2 in Bloomington.

The IULFC P&T committee will meet in early Oct. 2. Nancy Eckerman and Robin Crumrin are our representatives.

Old Business

Post Tenure Review

As reported by Sara Hook, the process is more appropriately named Faculty Enhancement & Enrichment. In the various (sub)committee reviews, it was determined that 69% of all academic institutions have or are working on implementing some form of review for chronic under-achievement or non-productivity. These tend to take two forms. First is the BROAD BRUSH approach which requires all faculty to undergo review every five years even though a very small percentage of the faculty have problems needing review. The second form is a TRIGGERING MECHANISM in which the chronic unproductiveness triggers a review.

IUPUI has a desire to have some form of post tenure review and the committees working on the document chose to create a policy with a triggering mechanism form which has safeguards for the faculty in such as peer review. While at the same time including accountability and responsibility from the University in the form of support for faculty development and personnel training for deans and department chairs.

At this point, the document does not fit well with the librarian scheme, but there will be ample time for discussion. President of Faculty Council is contacting the appropriate IUPUI groups and the document is being forwarded to University Faculty Council. The topic of post tenure review will be discussed by a committee of the Board of Trustees this in September.

Chris Long plans to have the Special Study Group and the IUPUI Faculty Standards Committee keep up with the progress of the document. We are also well served by with the prominent role Sara Hook has played in the document's development thus far.

Letters Task Force

The committee is charged with developing guidelines for letters in dossiers and is composed of Julie Fore (chair), Kellie Kaneshiro, Richard Humphrey and Tony Stamatopolis. Currently they are gathering policy and procedure information form departments around campus.

New Business

Brown Bag Forum. Chris is targeting a Wednesday in Mid-October for this year's Brown Bag Forum. Possible topics include How Technical and Public Services Converge and Ovid Training for Librarians.
Library Faculty Workshop. With INULA's new strategy of assisting local library development workshops via grants, Chris hopes to find a suitable topic to instruct ourselves with a workshop in the spring semester.
Marilyn Shaver is moving to a part-time position. Her old position was advertized before the Search & Screen committee reviewed the advertisement. There was no mention of library experience. Questions, comments, concerns should be directed to our Search & Screen representative Peggy Richwine.

The meeting was adjourned. Various Horizon demonstrations and discussions were then undertaken.

Respectfully submitted,
Minde Browning Secretary
