Jeffrey Michael Reies Duncan-Andrade, Ph.D

Jeffrey Michael Reies Duncan-Andrade, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Raza Studies and Education
Administration and Interdisciplinary Studies, and Co-Director of the Educational Equity Initiative
at San Francisco State University’s Cesar Chavez Institute (http://cci.sfsu.edu/taxonomy/term/28). In
addition to these duties,he teaches a 12th grade English Literature class at Oasis Community High
School (Oakland, CA) where he continues his research into the uses of critical pedagogy in urban
schools.
Before joining the faculty at SFSU, Duncan-Andrade taught English and coached in the
Oakland public schools for 10 years, and completed his doctoral studies at the University of California,
Berkeley. Duncan-Andrade’s research interests and publications span the areas of urban schooling
and curriculum change, urban teacher development and retention, critical pedagogy, and cultural
and ethnic studies.
He has authored numerous journal articles and book chapters on the conditions of urban education,
urban teacher support and development, and effective pedagogy in urban settings. He recently
completed a co-authored book on effective uses of critical pedagogy in the secondary classroom with
Peter Lang Publishing and is finishing a second book on the core competencies of highly effective
urban educators with Routledge Press.

Senti-Pensativos; Youth Grassroots Movement Making

One of the most pressing challenges is that of servant leadership. How should we be preparing our youth to face the challenges of the 21st century? Our approach to youth development is grounded in theories of critical epistemology, critical pedagogy, and cariño. We are excited to be joined by Dr. Jeff Duncan Andrade who will be discussing his newest work, THUG LIFE Pedagogy. Our workshop is grounded in popular education and involves an interactive activity that engages the participants in movement, dialogue, and deep reflection. Our audience will leave with a toolkit and resources that they can utilize to build and lead a youth grassroots movement.


The Talk: Sex and Latinos

The overall purpose of this workshop is to let young Latino students be aware of the Latina teen pregnancy epidemic and the consequences of it to the future generations of Latinos. The presentation will begin with current facts and statistics such as a Latina before the age of 20 years old has a 51% chance of getting pregnant. I will continue to talk about how this also leads to an assumption that if this many Latina women are vulnerable to becoming pregnant then they must also be susceptible to contracting a STD. Children who are born to teen parents have been shown to be less successful in going to college. Research has also proven that these children have more behavior issues and more health problems due to less access to healthcare. Toward the end of the workshop information will be given on the importance and correct usage of contraception as well as resources to obtain them. An explanation of STD’s will also be included. I will conclude the presentation by telling the audience as Latinos we will not be able to grow from invisible to invincible if we continue to disadvantage our youth or die of sexually transmitted diseases. (Approximately 10 minutes will be left for question and answers) 

Presentation Outline/Activities
1. As the conference attendees walk in they will be given profile of Latina youth between the ages of thirteen and nineteen. To show the statistics of Latina teen pregnancy cases each of the profiles will be color coded. (Blue papers will be non-pregnant teens and red would be pregnant) After a brief introduction the audience will see that about half of them if they were a Latina teenager will get pregnant. (15 minute speaking, 5 minute activity)
2. After discussion of the facts, statistics, and briefly before addressing the consequences audience members will have to pair off to financially plan for a child’s life. After this brief activity I will show prices of healthcare, housing costs, and food. I will also explain the disadvantages of children born to teen mothers and how this along with statistics will affect future generations of Latinos. (10 minute speaking, 5 min activity)
3. Before speaking about STD’s I will put the audience into groups and they will take a quiz on STD’s by looking at pictures. The group to get the most correct will win candy. (10 minute speaking, 5 minute activity) (10 min for Q&A)


How to Pay for College: Scholarship Opportunities for Latino Students

This presentation will be a panel discussion with representatives of various Latino-serving scholarship programs in Indiana. Information presented will include general information about financial aid and scholarship opportunities for Latino students (both U.S. citizens and undocumented students), as well as specific details about each of the scholarship programs represented (CICF- La Plaza and Mexican
Scholarship, Indiana Latino Institute, and SADCO Scholarships). Materials provided to the students include the applications for each scholarship, as well as the La Plaza Scholarship Guide.


Invincible Heroes

The people who populate this year's poster for the Latino Leadership conference are INVINCIBLE HEROES who are too often INVISIBLE in the curriculum of most schools. Perhaps participants may recognize the faces, but not know exactly why they are important in the struggle. Through this interactive workshop, participants will learn about or enhance their understanding of the role they played and how they continue to shape "El Movimiento." Participants will not sit and listen to a lecture, but rather, participate in a guided creation of an original work of art or poetry that will contain the knowledge they gain through the materials provided.

This workshop will consist mostly of a guide through websites and resources where these students can find information about political news, particularly as it relates to Latinos. Discussion of recent events/news – such as the effect of Latinos on the 2008 presidential election and legislation such as the DREAM Act (a bill to give the kids of illegal immigrants a path to citizenship) – will be used to show why it is important for Latinos to get involved in the political process and show the power they have in it (speaking to the theme of "invincible").

The Latino/a Youth Collective and the Campecine Youth Academy scholars produced various varriomentaries last summer that address critical issues that impact latino families throughout the Hoosier state. Our discussant will be Tim Wise, a nationally renowned expert on white privilege and anti-racist methodologies. Our presentation will engage the audience in dialogue and participatory activities regarding the seemingly insurmountable challenges our communities face such as fighting against an "opportunity gap" in education, for human rights in immigration policy, and working towards solidarity and building critical consciousness. The structure of our presentation is multi-media and delivered in various mediums. We use spoken word, testimonios, varriomentary, coyuntural analysis and participatory teatro to captivate our audience and move them from empathy to solidarity.

Who designed the first submarine? Who discovered the transmission of yellow fever? Who figured out the role of adrenalin in the brain? LATINOS!
Did you know that? Want to learn more? Come to this workshop which will include a brief but exciting overview of some of the greatest contributions made by Latinos in Science over the past 100 years. After the talk we will have a panel discussion, made up of undergraduate and graduate students, talking about research opportunities and answering questions on how you too can begin a research experience at your nearest college of university.

Nicolas Ramiro Valdez

Nicolás Ramiro Valdez, a self-proclaimed Cultural Activist, was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He began learning traditional Conjunto accordion at the age of nine at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center from Conjunto pioneers Valerio Longoria and Santiago Jimenez, Jr. Later he was awarded an Apprenticeship Grant from Texas Folklife Resources to study under master accordionist Fred Zimmerle. At age 10, he performed in his first acting role as the son of his late instructor, Valerio Longoria, Jr. At age 13, Nicolás became the youngest founding member of the Guadalupe Center’s resident youth theater company, Grupo Animo. Created to develop and continue the legacy of Teatro Xicano, Grupo Animo was a powerful medium for voicing the concerns of a new generation.

 

It was through Grupo that Nicolás gained invaluable performance experience. He soon began fostering working relationships with various non-profit arts organizations including Jump-Start Performance Co., the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, Teatro de Artes de Juan Seguin (where he co-founded a Conjunto music program), and others. A year before graduating high school, Nicolás performed with an emerging collective of San Antonio based artists. This collective, now known as MadMedia, quickly became the main avenue for Nicolás to develop as a writer, musician, actor, and poet.

 

Nicolás moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2002 with his wife and daughter after completing a national tour of Zoot Suit with the acclaimed Teatro Campesino. He has since fostered working relationships with Teatro Visión, Pocha Nostra, San Francisco Mime Troupe, and Culture Clash. In his 15 plus years as a working artist, Nicolás has shared the stage with Sandra Cisneros, Maya Angelou, Jesse Borrego, Luis Valdez, Guillermo Gomez-Peña, Lalo Guerrero, and many others.

Our workshop is titled "El Arte Es Esperanza." We would like to showcase the talent and artist inside every member of the conference. We will be joined by local spoken word artists, cultural activist Nicolas Valdez, and all participants of the conference are invited to express their creativity and talent. Our presentation goes hand in hand with the conference theme because we will create a space for youth to show us what invincible is, sounds like, and experience the power of how spoken word can bring a community together.


What is a Latino/a

Latinos Unidos of Indiana University will like to host a workshop entitled “What is a Latino/a?”.  This workshop will be held in a game show fashion where the audience will be asked questions around education, leadership, social awareness, and culture influences. This workshop will help inform the audience of stereotypes and inspire them to break these stereotypes as those before us have done.


"Climbing the Tree of Success wihtout Cutting Your Roots"

Objective: To provide information to individuals on how to be a successful leader without sacrificing their culture.

How it will work: We will have guest speaker, Patricia Mota, Assistant Director of Admissions for Ivy Tech-Indianapolis, begin the workshop with a discussion of what leadership is. (Example topics: what qualities does a good leader possess, why is it important to be a leader, etc.) We then want to incorporate the importance of maintaining one's culture. (Example topics: Does someone have to sacrifice his/her culture to be a good leader, how can we maintain our culture AND be leaders, finding a balance with culture and success, etc.)

We then would like to facilitate an open discussion with the audience on different experiences they have had in fulfilling a leadership role as a latino/a. Our goal in doing this is to allow individuals who have not yet been able to experience the gratification of being a leader the opportunity to learn from the individuals in the workshop who have been and are leaders. We want to encourage discussion, communication and a sense of unity throughout the workshop.

We will also be providing packets of information for people coming to the workshop. We will have separate packets for college and high school students that will provide information about different leadership opportunities and ways of discovering how to become involved not only with their individual schools and universities but also in the world we all share.

The workshop will end with the opportunity for everyone to ask questions and network in hopes that groups of people will begin working together in the future to have a stronger impact on the communities that we live in while maintaining where we have come from and what we represent.

Latina/os and Law School: What you Want to and Should Know

As law school students we are conscious of the lack of Latina/os in higher education, therefore we would like to conduct a panel in order to field questions that students may have. This would allow Latina/o students whom are interested in law school to engage in honest dialogue about what it is like to be a Latina/o in law school. As we would like this panel to be interactive the focus of the panel would be answering any questions or concerns that students may have regarding law school. We would like to get students thinking about and preparing for law school. We would provide various materials and resources such as financial aid information, top law school guides, statistics, and applications among other resources. Most importantly we would like to reinforce and help serve those students whom would like to attend law school regardless of where it may be.
