Frequently Asked Questions

Passport

Partners

What is Passport?

Passport is a coordinated program between Ivy Tech Community College-Central Indiana and Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Passport strives to increase course and degree articulations between institutions, maintains advising offices at both campuses, offers cooperative student services, facilitates shared access to student records, offers IUPUI Passport scholarships and promotes student life programs. The goal of the Passport office is to make the transfer of credit and/or degrees between the two institutions as seamless as possible.

How do I know if my credits will transfer?

Check the Passport website for course and degree articulations. Visit the Passport Advising Office at Ivy Tech located in the Student Services area and speak with an advisor or call 917-5720 and make an appointment. IUPUI students should check with their departmental advisor.

On the transfer list of courses what does #1XX or #2XX mean?

IUPUI will accept the course and give undistributed credit. Each department determines if or how this course will be used. DO NOT assume undistributed credit will automatically transfer to your degree.

I am an IUPUI student and I want to take a class at Ivy Tech. What do I do?

Visit the Ivy Tech Admissions office and meet with an Admissions officer. You should enroll as non-degree seeking. Check to make sure you have taken the necessary prerequisites.

Will my course automatically be transferred to my IUPUI transcript?

You must submit an official Ivy Tech transcript to IUPUI once all final grades have been posted. You may mail or hand deliver the official Ivy Tech trancript. You must earn a grade of "C" or better for IUPUI to consider transferring credit.

Will the grade transfer and affect my GPA?

The credits transfer but the grade does not.

If I failed a course at IUPUI can I repeat it at Ivy Tech or vice versa?

No, you must repeat the class at the same institution where you originally took it.

Can I use my Financial Aid?

Visit the Financial Aid office at your HOME school and request a Passport Financial Assistance Agreement form. Follow the instructions on the sheet and obtain all necessary signatures. Students MUST be enrolled in at least 3 credits at both intuitions to be eligible.

Partners

What is Partners?

Partners is a cooperative program between Ivy Tech Community College and IUPUI that gives students the opportunity to strengthen their academic preparation before attending IUPUI. Students in the Partners Program will have their admission to IUPUI deferred until they complete studies at Ivy Tech.

When a student applies to IUPUI, the admissions committee identifies those who have deficiencies in their previous academic work and recommends they begin coursework at IvyTech.

Students are deferred for

  • insufficient number of C or higher grades in college preparatory courses.
  • not completing a Core 40 curriculum.
  • low GED scores.

How does Partners work?

Students whose admission is deferred must complete the following steps:

  • Complete a free IvyTech Application.  You will need to submit an official copy of your high school transcript or GED scores.
  • Take the Ivy Tech assessment tests in reading, writing and mathematics.

If you have taken the SAT or ACT exams check with an Ivy Tech testing counselor to see if you qualify for a waiver.

  • Complete any review courses required by Ivy Tech.
  • Complete 15 credit hours of 100-level college Ivy Tech with a grade of C or better in each course.

What classes do I need to take?

  • ENGL 111  English Composition
  • MATH 111  Intermediate Algebra

Plus three courses chosen from the following:

  • HIST 101 Survey of American History 1
  • PHIL 101 Introduction to Philosophy
  • PSYC 101 General Psychology
  • SOCI 111 Principles of Sociology
  • COMM 101 Speech
  • CINS 101 Introduction to Microcomputers
  • POLS 101 American Government
  • ANTH 154 Anthropology

*Check with Partners (Passport) advisor at Ivy Tech to identify courses that will transfer into your IUPUI program of study.

Will the Ivy Tech Classes Transfer to IUPUI

The college level courses recommended by the Partners program are transferable to IUPUI as long as they are passed with a grade of C or better. Review classes do not transfer but are necessary as pre-requisites for the 100 level classes.

Can I transfer my financial aid to Ivy Tech?

Yes, if you qualify, you will be able to use your financial aid at Ivy Tech. Ask an Ivy Tech admissions or financial aid advisor for more information.

What if I do not complete all of the requirements of the partners program?

Students who have not completed the Partners requirements are referred back to Ivy Tech to complete the necessary coursework before they will be admitted to IUPUI.

How does the partners program benefit me?

  • Ivy Tech Community College offers the most affordable tuition in the state.
  • Students receive free tutoring in math and writing labs.
  • Small class size and teacher to student ratio.
  • Accommodations are available for students with documented disabilities.
  • Advisors are available to answer your questions about the future course selection and the transfer process.
  • Night, weekend and off-campus classes are available.
  • Partner students are eligible to receive an IUPUI JagTag which gives them access to a low cost sports-recreation pass, university library and student discounts.

What do students say about Partners?

“In high school, I wasn’t interested in my classes and got bad grades. Starting at Ivy Tech helped me become more focused. Ivy Tech courses challenged me to learn and helped me find my interest. Transferring my credits to IUPUI was easy. I’m doing well in the Elementary Education program at IUPUI and chose that program because I realize how important education is.”

-Ellen, Carmel H.S. graduate, Sophomore at IUPUI

“For people who aren't sure if they can make it at a university, Ivy Tech is a great place to start. It was beneficial for me, but it's all what you put into it. You have to want it. Transferring to IUPUI was easy. Because I started at Ivy Tech, I'm doing great at IUPUI.”

-Cherish, Arsenal Technical H.S. graduate, Sophomore at IUPUI
