FAQ for Parents

What services are available  at IUPUI Health Services?
IUPUI Health Services provides primary and acute care services to IUPUI students.  For a complete listing of services, please visit the Student Services section.

Will I be notified if my child visits IUPUI Health Services for any reason?
If your child visits IUPUI Health Services under routine circumstances, your child’s confidentiality will be maintained and you will not be notified.  Should your child visit IUPUI Health Services in an emergency situation, and you are listed as your child’s emergency contact, you will be notified.  Students under the age of 18 are only seen for emergent or urgent care without parental consent. Efforts to contact a parent by telephone will be made in urgent or emergent situations. Written parental consent is necessary for routine care and other needs if the student is younger than 18.

Does it cost anything for my child to visit IUPUI Health Services?
Yes, students visiting IUPUI Health Services will have to pay for their visits, vaccinations, medications, and lab/X-ray fees.

How much does a visit cost?
The cost of your visit will depend on the services you receive and the provider who treats you.  Office visit fees range from $30 for a nurse visit to up to $150 for a physician or nurse practitioner visit.

Lab and X-ray charges are billed separately by the companies that provide the service, i.e. University Hospital or South Bend Medical Foundation.

Do you accept insurance?
IUPUI Health Services will file insurance claims for medical students with Chickering insurance. Questions about coverage need to be directed to the insurance company.

IUPUI Health Services will not file insurance claims for any other students.  Non-medical school students or students with other types of insurance must pay for their visit at the time of service.  These students will be provided a receipt to submit to the insurance company, but students must initially pay out-of-pocket for the services received at IUPUI Health Services.

What forms of payment do you accept?
IUPUI Health Services will accept cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, and the JagTag

My child has called and said he or she is sick and does not have money to visit IUPUI Health Services.  What can I do?
If your child is sick and needs to be seen, we will see him/her.  You can deposit money onto your child’s JagTag, which can be used to pay for the visit or a credit card number can be called to the clinic.  Money can be deposited into your child’s JagTag account in a variety of ways, including via phone and web.

What happens if my child becomes ill or is injured when IUPUI Health Services is closed?
If your child lives on campus or near downtown, he or she can visit one of many hospital emergency rooms on campus or in the area.  See Emergency Care for more information and locations on and near campus.

Does IUPUI require that my child has had any particular vaccinations?

Many universities require students living on campus to show proof of meningitis vaccination.  IUPUI Health Services currently recommends that all students living on campus receive the meningitis vaccination.

  1. All students should have received a Tetanus/Diptheria vaccination within the past 10 years. Most Tetanus vaccines include Diptheria.
  2. Residential students (living on campus) must show proof of immunity to measles, mumps and rubella. Two vaccinations are needed for those born after January 1, 1957. If born before that date, a history of having the illnesses is accepted. Proof of immunity also includes lab tests that demonstrate acceptable antibody levels to the illnesses. The form to submit is downloadable.

IUPUI clinical programs (medicine, dentistry, nursing, etc.) determine vaccination guidelines for students admitted to their programs.  Currently, these guidelines include:

  1. Proof of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination—2 doses
  2. It is strongly recommended that before beginning clinical experiences, clinical students receive the Hepatitis B vaccination (3 doses). It is required of medical students.

International students will need Tuberculosis surveillance.
