A Model Managed Mental Healthcare Program

IUPM is a managed mental health program developed within Indiana University which links quality mental health and substance abuse providers in the community with a superior academic psychiatric program.

Genesis

IUPM was formed by the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at the IU School of Medicine to provide high quality services in a managed care environment and to assume a leadership role in development of managed mental healthcare in the state of Indiana.

Experience

IUPM has been operational since 1994 and has successfully managed the care for all Indiana University employees and dependants. IUPM has also developed programs with several other employers, HMOs, and Managed Care Companies.

The administrative staff of IUPM have ongoing experience in psychiatric care and managed mental healthcare.

Goals

IUPM operates on the principles of:

  • Ongoing authorization for all care
  • Full continuum of services
  • Treatment at the most appropriate level
  • Individualized treatment planning
  • Problem-focused therapeutic approach
  • Integration with the delivery of care
