Goals
IU-ASAP Goals
- To impact the knowledge and attitudes of adolescents toward tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.
- To develop a service learning experience for students in the health professions.
- To develop a collaboration with four IU health professions schools/departments (medicine, nursing, dentistry and public health), Clarian Health Partners, and Indianapolis Public Schools.
ASAP Goals
- To highlight the relationships between organ physiology, a functioning body, and good health.
- To provide developmentally appropriate materials that promote an understanding of both the medical and social consequences of drug use. ASAP focuses on both the long-term and short-term consequences.
- To actively explore the pathophysiology of drug use and its relationship to the daily activities of adolescents.
- To recognize internal and external pressures that can influence students to use drugs.
- To emphasize that use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs is not the norm among teenagers.
- To develop an opportunity for adolescents to devise and practice strategies for rejecting drugs.
- To complement substance abuse prevention education within the home, schools, and community and to provide networking resources.
- To inspire interest in science, as well as a respect for and fascination with the human body.
- To encourage students in the heath professions to develop skills to communicate effectively with adolescents.
- To empower students in the health professions to serve as role models for youth.
