Assessing Professional Competencies Through Service Learning: A Dialogue and Think Tank

June 16-18, 2010

This dialogue and think tank examines the use of service learning
pedagogy to assess students’ competence for social work practice.

Think Tank Objectives
Participants will:

  1. Define the necessary components of service learning within a social justice paradigm appropriate to social work;
  2. Identify practice behaviors associated with social work professional competencies that can be observed/measured through service learning;
  3. Share assessment procedures that demonstrate students’ mastery of competencies through the service learning experience.

This event is limited to 100 participants.  We anticipate two tracks: (1) Faculty who are new to service learning and (2) Seasoned service learning educators.  There will be a mix of separate and joint sessions.  Experts in the field of service learning assessment and reflection will join us for plenary workshops.  Please see the Think Tank website for ongoing developments and schedule.  In part, the structure will evolve as we get feedback from participants.
