Informatics students celebrate women in computing

February 5, 2010 — Students from the School of Informatics will join a contingent of 22 female students from IUPUI attending the Indiana Celebration of Women in Computing (InWIC) conference this weekend, February 5th through 6th. The conference brings together 150 female students, educators and professionals from around the state to discuss technical and social issues impacting women in the computing industry. A career fair and other networking opportunities will also be available.

Media Arts and Science student receives second annual ThemeVision scholarship

Bianca Garfias, MAS JuniorJanuary 28, 2010 — The Indiana University School of Informatics at IUPUI and ThemeVision LLC are pleased to announce that Bianca Garfias has been named recipient of the ThemeVision Scholarship, an award recognizing an outstanding minority student in the School’s Media Arts and Science (MAS) program. Garfias was presented the honor at a recent luncheon hosted by Dennis Stolle, president and founder of ThemeVision LLC. This is the second consecutive year that the company, a provider of trial consulting and courtroom graphics services, has sponsored the scholarship.

From Indiana to India: School of Informatics helping bridge the international life and computer sciences gap

Mathew Palakal, Ph.D.January 26, 2010 — A joint effort between the Indiana University School of Informatics at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) in India aims to increase international research opportunities among life and computer science scholars. Both institutions have co-founded the first International Symposium on Biocomputing (ISB) to take place February 15th-17th in Calicut, India. Lecturers and presenters representing 14 countries will focus on bioinformatics and biotechnology - two fields of study that bridge the gap between information technology and biology. Organizers hope that resulting collaborations may impact the scientific community’s understanding of biological systems and improve quality of human life.

IU School of Informatics announces Colloquia for spring 2010

January 14, 2010 — The IU School of Informatics at IUPUI is pleased to announce its Colloquia for spring 2010. Colloquia provide IUPUI students, faculty and staff the opportunity to hear from leading researchers in the dynamic fields of informatics, media arts, and the health and life sciences. Presentations begin January 22, 2010 with speaker Eli Blevis, Ph.D., and his lecture titled, “Collaborative competitive challenge-based studio learning (C3SL) in the context of HCI and HCC.”

Students combine informatics and culture in unique study abroad opportunity in Greece

Paros, GreeceJanuary 14, 2010 — This summer, students at the IU School of Informatics at IUPUI will travel to the Greek isles to learn how they can use informatics to help preserve and celebrate a nation’s culture and history. The unique service-learning course, titled “Digital documentation of cultural heritage,” is offered June 21 through July 17 in Paros, Greece. Open to all IUPUI students in good standing, applications are being accepted through the Study Abroad Office until March 15. VisionFest returns; Call for entries

For more information, visit www.visionfest.orgJanuary 12, 2010 — VisionFest, a juried student animation festival, will make its return to the IUPUI campus October 22nd through 24th. The festival, organized and hosted by the IU School of Informatics at IUPUI since 2005, is now accepting entries for competition and screening. High school, undergraduate and graduate students from around the world are invited to submit their work in the categories of animation and games/interactive arts. Extreme web makeover: 48 hours, three websites, one great cause

January 11, 2010 — The Indiana University School of Informatics at IUPUI and RefreshIndy, a local organization of web designers, developers and graphic artists, are bringing together the best professional and student talent in Indianapolis to develop three websites for three local non-profit organizations within 48 hours. This non-stop event begins at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 15 at the Informatics and Communication Technology Complex on the IUPUI campus. The date leads into the University’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service encouraging students, faculty and staff to give back to the greater Indianapolis community.

Informatics students receive national recognition

Jeffrey Klann, M.Eng.January 7, 2010 — Jon D. Duke, M.D., and Jeffrey Klann, M.Eng., students of the Indiana University School of Informatics and medical informatics fellows at the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University School of Medicine, have been recognized by the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) for their development and testing of two new physician support computer tools. Their work has the potential to improve patient safety and healthcare quality while lowering costs.

Media Arts and Science students celebrate graduation with biannual Capstone and Final Project event

December 9, 2009 — The Indiana University School of Informatics at IUPUI will once again host the Media Arts and Science Capstone and Final Project Evening this Friday, December 11th between 4 PM and 8 PM at the Informatics and Communication Technology Complex.  Free parking is available just west of the complex. This event, held twice yearly at the conclusion of each semester, celebrates and showcases the work of graduating Media Arts and Science students. Twenty-five undergraduate and graduate students will present and display their work, representing hundreds of hours of dedication and multiple forms of digital media. The Capstone and Final Project experience is the culmination of a student’s knowledge and abilities in a particular area of study, including digital storytelling, integrated media, web development and video and sound production. All IUPUI faculty, staff, students, alumni, employers and the general public are encouraged to attend. A schedule of the evening’s events is available for download here.

IU School of Informatics faculty present at 2009 Midwest HIMSS Technology Conference

November 12, 2009 — Josette Jones and Sara Anne Hook, faculty at Indiana University’s School of Informatics in Indianapolis, recently gave a presentation at the 2009 Midwest Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Technology Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Their competitively-selected lecture, titled “The Impact of the 2009 Stimulus Provision on the Privacy, Security and Accessibility of the Personal Health Record (PHR),” compared the Electronic Health Record with the Personal Health Record in the wake of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
