Jennifer Anderson spends her days watching Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) students pedal stationary bikes, walk on treadmills and lift weights at three area high schools. And while the IU School of Education graduate oversees those efforts, she’s doing her own “training” — training those IPS students in physical fitness habits that could shape not only their bodies, but also their lives.

This year, 73 physical education students and 55 tourism management students made camp their home during a portion of the month of May, participating in required coursework including camping leadership, individual sports, catering management and destination planning.

“Creative Class” author speaks; $25,000 cash prize awarded during recent Cultural Tourism Conference.

Known as the world’s most influential scholar on the rise of the creative class and the impact of cultural tourism on a community’s economy, bestselling author Dr. Richard Florida headlined the Department of Tourism, Conventions and Event Management’s Cultural Tourism Conference on May 12, 2006.  The event was conducted at the University Place Conference Center on the IUPUI Campus.

School honors Phil Hardwick for contributions to school and IUPUI.

The School of Physical Education and Tourism Management honored Phillip K. Hardwick as the 2006 Spirit of Philanthropy recipient during a campus-wide luncheon celebrating the contributions of some of the university’s most generous donors and volunteers.

School announces recent appointments and faculty news.

P. Nicholas Kellum, Dean of the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, recently announced three new appointments in the Department of Physical Education, effective August 15, 2006.

Dr. Brian Culp will be appointed Assistant Professor of Physical Education. Dr. Culp earned a M.S. degree from Georgia State University in Sports Administration and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in Physical Education and Sports Studies.  Dr. Culp has been on the faculty of Armstrong Atlantic State University.

Dr. Lisa Farley, who completed two years as a Visiting Lecturer at the school, will assume new duties as a Lecturer in Physical Education.  While serving the school during the last two years, Dr. Farley completed her doctorate at Ball State University.

Dr. Jake Streepey will be appointed Assistant Professor of Physical Education.  Dr. Streepey earned both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan in Kinesiology.  He is currently completing a Post Doctoral Fellowship at the Rehabilitation Hospital in Chicago, Northwestern University.

In addition, two current faculty members will share their expertise within other areas of IUPUI.

Dr. Rafael Bahamonde, Associate Professor of Physical Education recently accepted the opportunity to work as the Director of the Diversity Scholars Research Program. Half of Dr. Bahamonde’s time will be dedicated to this program and working in the Center for Research and Learning (CRL).  Dr. Bahamonde will continue to serve as Associate Professor of Physical Education during the other half of his time.

Dr. NiCole Keith entered a research-mentoring program in the IU Center for Aging Research in order to increase her capacity to compete for federal research funding in the life sciences as an independent investigator within the Department of Physical Education.

Dr. Keith’s research interest which involves obesity and physical activity in low-income and minority populations as highly synergistic with the research themes of the IU-Roybal.  Beginning in June 2006, with funding support from the Department of Physical Education and the IU-Roybal, Dr. Keith will commit 60% of her academic efforts to research.

On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, we congratulate these outstanding faculty members and wish them continued success in their new endeavors.
