How are gifts used and why are they needed?

As available funding for higher education continues to decline, contributions to the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management make a difference for students and the school now more than ever before.

In fact, the school’s own faculty and staff believe in this statement so much that for the last three consecutive years, 100 percent of faculty and staff have contributed to the school through the annual campus wide giving campaign.  Our school is one of only two units in the IU system that contributes at 100 percent.  It is the hope of faculty and staff that through these personal gifts, many given through payroll deduction right from their salaries, the school’s alumni and friends will be inspired to support the school, as well.

What will your gifts do?

Your contributions help the school to maintain affordable tuition for students and to provide scholarships to deserving young people who might not otherwise be able to achieve an education.

Your gifts provide much-needed resources, allowing our leadership to be flexible and responsive to the greatest needs of our students and school.

And, among many other things, your generosity ensures the school's financial health and permits our departments to better serve our students, our community, and our profession through teaching, research, and service.

What are the greatest needs?

Camp Brosius

Each spring, Camp Brosius opens its doors to IUPUI students, families and children. Physical Education and Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management majors attend camp annually for required coursework including camping leadership, lifetime sports, catering management and destination planning.  After college camp concludes, the adventure and tradition of family camp begins. The School of Physical Education and Tourism Management General Account

With the decline of state support for our school, your unrestricted gifts allow school leaders to be flexible and responsive to unplanned administrative and operational needs.  Gifts to this account also benefit scholarships and awards, and allow the school to take advantage of unexpected opportunities and meet unplanned challenges that arise after budgets are set.  As one might imagine, these gifts are critical to the successful operations of the school.

Student Scholarships

Students enrolled in degree-seeking programs have opportunities to apply for monetary awards, but students could benefit from additional support. Most of our scholarships are $1,000 or less, and a $5,000 gap remains for student tuition.  In the words of one of our scholarship recipients, "If I didn't receive scholarships, I wouldn't be able to go to school."  Read more.

The Department of Physical Education's Research Equipment Needs

The Department of Physical Education conducts research to improve the health and welfare of the general population.  Equipped with a laboratory and well-educated faculty, the school needs contributions to purchase additional equipment and fund research.  With donor support, the school may achieve its full potential as a research facility and contribute to the work conducted across the IUPUI urban research campus.  Learn more.

The Department of Tourism, Conventions and Event Management Faculty Research Fund

The Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management assists the city of Indianapolis, nonprofits, and other groups with research related to quality of life, tourism and destination travel.  Find out more.

Department of Recreational Sports

The Department of Recreational Sports offers low-cost personal fitness and recreational sport opportunities to all IUPUI students, faculty and staff.  Unfortunately, after helping countless students, faculty and staff reduce stress levels, improve their emotional and physical health, and manage their weight, our equipment is aging.  Rec sports needs contributions to purchase new equipment for the weight and fitness facilities, group exercise classes, team sports, and its facilities.  Your contributions would begin to work immediately to provide these resources, helping many to achieve and maintain good physical and mental health.

Department of Military Science:  The Department of Military Science works with the United States government and our school to provide higher education opportunities to military cadets.  In return, these cadets serve in the United States Military after graduation.  Your gifts to the school's Military Science Fund benefit programs for military science students that the government and IUPUI do not fund.  These programs include the annual military ball, an educational field trip to a historical battlefield, and leadership and team development programs.  Gifts are applied directly to these programs designed to enhance their military training and leadership development initiatives.

IUPUI Moving Company: Organized in 1983, the IUPUI moving company stages traditional dance performances in the Indianapolis community. Modern, ballet, tap, African, Spanish, and jazz dancing styles are all part of this group's repertoire.  Their performances simultaneously enhance the Indianapolis arts community's dance offerings and achieve the company's goal to give students the opportunity to work and perform in a professional setting.  The company does not own its own facility and raises money to offset theatre rental and costume costs for shows.
