What THS Can Do for You …

The Tourism, Conventions and Event Management (TCEM) department’s Tourism and Hospitality Society (THS) reaches record enrollment as students are finding out what THS can do for their career.

THS held their annual call-out meeting on October 2nd in the new student center with record attendance. Over 37 students were able to attend the meeting and the number of students interested in getting involved is still increasing. The faculty advisor, Kristin Norris, attributes the increased interest to their marketing efforts, the new flexible schedule, student leadership efforts, and the use of Oncourse to facilitate communication, involvement, and participation.

Why Participate?

Students are encouraged to get involved with THS for a number of reasons. First, numerous networking opportunities throughout the semester can lead to internships and careers. Second, it offers students an opportunity to socialize and get to know each other outside the classroom. Third, it encourages community and industry involvement, and is a good way for students to volunteer and give back.

Part of the mission of the Physical Education and Tourism Management Student Council is to do philanthropic work. THS feels it is important to do as much as they possibly can, as well. Involvement in student organizations shows dedication to the industry and looks great on resumes. In all, student organizations would not be successful if it weren’t for the time, effort, and dedication the students put forth. Becoming a member or serving as an officer is a great way to build leadership skills and is a great way to become more involved with your program of study.

Organizational Changes

THS is changing to stay current and relevant. In an effort to meet the needs of the growing student population, student officers decided to hold monthly meetings at varying times throughout the semester. In the past, students that had class during the scheduled meeting time were unable to attend and could not get involved with the organization. The next meeting is scheduled for November 13th at 9am in the Student Center, Room CE 309.

The next big change is the creation of the Oncourse site. Those students with current memberships are added to an Oncourse site that will allow for greater communication and access to information. Those who are unable to attend a meeting will be able to access minutes and even a podcast of the guest speaker! Through the use of technology, Kristin Norris will be able to record the presentations each month and convert the presentation to a file that can then be played on an iPod or their home computer.

Lastly, the officers wanted to coordinate more volunteering efforts that students can then use for internship and networking.

Future Events

Currently, the organization is planning for the second annual trip to Cedar Point, which will take place during the month of June. This event was a huge success last year and hope it will be even bigger this year. THS charters a bus that picks up at IUPUI on a Sunday morning and arranges for guest speakers from different departments within the park (hotel sales, park operations, group sales, etc) to give a tour of the park and talk to students about career opportunities. Students then have the rest of the afternoon to enjoy the rides and to hang out with their peers. The date for this trip is not yet finalized, but information will be posted in the spring. Anyone is welcome to join us! We guarantee a good time!
