Students return from Camp Brosius; Family camp entertains alumni and guests.

This year, 73 physical education students and 55 tourism management students made camp their home during a portion of the month of May, participating in required coursework including camping leadership, individual sports, catering management and destination planning.

This is one of the best camps we’ve experienced,” said Dean Kellum, School of Physical Education and Tourism Management.  “The students demonstrated a high level of enthusiasm and a remarkable commitment to learning.”

Each spring, camp opens its doors to more than 100 IUPUI students, providing an experiential laboratory for degree-seeking students enrolled in the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management. Since 1921, physical education majors have attended camp for required coursework. Tourism, Conventions and Event Management majors have participated annually since 1994 and are required to take two credit hours.

One of the school’s students, Melissa Barb, is excited to return to camp, perhaps as a future counselor. “Camp Brosius was an amazing learning opportunity and a chance to bond with fellow classmates and instructors.  It really brings people together in a unique educational environment that is relaxing, relationship building, and productive. I’d like to go back maybe as a counselor or visitor.”

After college camp concludes, the adventure continues for Indiana University alumni, their families and guests.  Counselors are trained college students who work to provide a variety of age-appropriate programming to camp patrons.  Children and teens learn new skills and engage in activities designed to promote physical fitness and a love for camping.  Adults learn from guest lecturers and reconnect with family and friends in a serene setting.

This year, the school launched a comprehensive fundraising effort to enhance the camp, with emphasis on the rustic cabins.  Funds are needed to refurbish existing rustic cabins and provide new beds and furnishings, among other renovations.

A camp advisory board was initiated this year within the school.  Part of that board includes a sustainability committee to assist in this area. Mark Vaughan, long-time camper and chair of the advisory board’s sustainability, is working hard to promote this effort.  “We have made great strides during the past few years to enhance the features and comforts of the camp.  To continue this great start, we’re embarking on a significant fundraising effort to ensure camp’s future and provide the camp experience for generations to come.”
