TCEM Students Seek Opportunities within DMCs

Students that are unsure of their career path were given an opportunity to hear how to combine multiple interests into the perfect job.

On November 13th, the Tourism and Hospitality Society hosted Sarah Hines, Event Coordinator for Accent on Indianapolis, a local destination management company. Accent on Indianapolis, a third party vendor, has been classified as a DMC for 19 years. They provides many services such as transportation/shuttle services, meet and greets, unique productions with décor, tours, logistics, themed parties, and other special events. A unique aspect of a DMC is the wide range of clients a DMC can encounter.

Ms. Hines outlined some of the pros and cons of working for a DMC.

Pros: the workday is never the same because most events are customized, you get to work with many diverse groups, and you get to make many different relationships with clients, vendors, and other companies.

Cons: things can get stressful, especially when a client is asking for an event last minute, you must rely on many people around you to get their part done, the hours can be various, and since Accent is a third part, there is very little face-to-face interaction with the end client which can be hard to get the final idea across.

Accent on Indianapolis has been using TCEM students as a resource and have offered them an opportunity to earn valuable experience within the industry. This allows students to witness an event from various perspectives, which then enables them to decide which sector of the event planning industry they might want to pursue after graduation.
