Frances Mayes, best-selling author of Under the Tuscan Sun and A Year in the World, delivered the Inaugural Efroymson Lecture on International Art, Culture and Heritage on October 8, 2008.
The event, hosted by the Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management, took place in the Campus Center. The title of France Mayes’ lecture was Writing in Place: Travels with My Notebook. During her remarks, she presented her personal experience of traveling and living abroad, her inspiration for traveling and writing and how travel can change us. There was a book singing right after. It was a successful event with around 400 people in the audience.
The next day, Frances Mayes was a guest speaker in TCEM 472 Global Tourism Seminar where she had a conversation with 50 students. She mentioned that she enjoys visiting places that she is not familiar with and is always surprised by the differences in cultures. She talked about places that she would like to visit in the future and gave suggestions to students about traveling abroad.
She commented that she was pleased to learn that the Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management’s curriculum helps students learn about different cultures and countries. She strongly encouraged students to learn foreign languages and to take advantage of study abroad opportunities.
