Singing around a campfire, going on field trips
all over Wisconsin, serving and preparing food for over eighty
people, what does this sound like to you? Camp Brosius, sign
me up! Students in the four year degree of Tourism, Convention
and Event Management at IUPUI have the mandatory opportunity
to travel and live in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin for ten days.
During their stay, students complete two required courses:
Event Catering Management (391) and Destination Planning (306).
Students are required to find their own transportation
to Wisconsin; most opting to car pool with friends for the
six hour trip from Indianapolis. Also, getting to know your
cabin mates and classmates is important from the start, because
you will live with these people for a week and a half.
Upon arrival, students are immediately pulled
into classes; each class is five days long. The purpose of
the Event Catering Management class is to familiarize yourself
with the Camp kitchen, dining hall and to prepare breakfast,
lunch and dinner for the entire camp during your five day
shift. Students get hands on learning from start to finish
of every meal. This class is taught by Senior Lecturer, Jim
Bennett. Mr. Bennett is a jack of all trades in the kitchen
and offers much needed help and advice throughout the course.
Students are teamed up with another classmate and a required
to prepare a menu plan for two different meals and are "in
charge" during that meal time.
Destination Planning is taught by Associate
Professor Sotiris Avgoustis.
This class provides students with the opportunity
to learn about the history of Camp Brosius and Elkhart Lake,
Wisconsin. Dr. Avgoustis also takes students on several field
trips around Wisconsin including, Kohler, the American Club,
Green Bay, Lake Winnebago and more. The purpose of the class
is to present a marketing plan to entice visitors to come
to Camp Brosius year round and to visit other Wisconsin attractions.
"I think camp is important to TCEM majors because of
the unique course content offered there. I also think camp
is a place where students can learn teamwork, leadership and
communication skills", said Dean Kellum of the importance
of going to Camp Brosius.
During valuable free time, students have the
opportunity to do a variety of activities. Typical activities
include hanging out with friends, playing basketball or volleyball,
sleeping, canoeing or taking a speed boat ride with Dean Kellum.
"The best part about camp was going on a speed boat
ride in sixty degree weather and having a blanket and scarf
wrapped around my head and still freezing!", said TCEM
student Jamie Bourquin. Students also join in on the evening
camp activities lead by camp staff and physical education
students. Evening activity examples include Casino Night,
relay races, Capture the Flag and many more. There is always
a lot to do at Camp Brosius!
Camp is not just a time to fulfill class requirements.
The best part of camp is meeting new people and getting to
know professors better. It has been nice to see people that
you met at camp when walking down the hallway at school. Camp
will be something that you will remember for the rest of your
life about your time at IUPUI. Life is all about relationships
and this is another opportunity to develop them.
TCEM Scholarship
Opportunities Make Possibilities Become Reality
By Stephanie Haston
Scholarship opportunities pave the way for students
like Melissa Gausmann, recipient of the 2003-2004 Elias and
Fofo Stergiopoulos Scholarship to complete additional coursework
that otherwise would not have been possible. Many TCEM students
like Melissa, are "working students", students who
strive to complete their academic goals and contribute to
the Tourism, Convention and Event Management Industry meanwhile
working full or part time, holding down family and community
commitments or other outside obligations. "This scholarship
allowed me to increase my classload without incurring additional
tuition expenses," according to Melissa.
The Elias and Fofo Stergiopoulos Scholarship
recognizes a student with a degree G.P.A. of 2.0 or greater
who demonstrates service to the department through committee
work and/or student organization participation, and works
20 hours or more per week. Melissa’s ability to achieve
this delicate balance coupled with her strong sense of community
and volunteer service distinguished her among fellow applicants.
Scholarship opportunities would not be possible
without the support of key industry figures, "friends"
of the TCEM department and alumni contributions.
According to Gretchen Hueni, Development Director
of The IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management,
"Scholarship development through alumni contributions
demonstrates support for current students and reflects appreciation
for the opportunities afforded them by completion of TCEM
program. Development of such scholarships and awards builds
program recognition and recruits "Top" quality students
to educate and give back to the industry by becoming future
industry leaders themselves."
Michael Searle, recipient of three scholarships
this year said it best when he described the importance of
giving to scholarship development. "Someone who contributes
to scholarship programs at the school is not only helping
to further the cause of hospitality and hospitality education,
he or she is also helping to develop the knowledge, skills,
and abilities of another human being. I think this is one
of the most beneficial things that anyone can do for another
person."
Tamara Pennington, this year’s recipient
of the Raymond A. Dault "Care, Pride and Skill"
Scholarship for Outstanding Freshman academic achievement
was surprised and honored to be acknowledged for her hard
work and efforts. This was especially important to her because
she is representative of a non-traditional student, a 47 year-old
woman entering an environment typically focused on a more
traditional high school graduate, younger student population.
According to Tamara, "The TCEM program’s environment
created by traditional live, web-based and accelerated classes
in addition to top notch instructors energized my outlook
about coming back to school, I was excited to be attending
classes and challenging tradition and myself".
The continued scholarship development joined
by TCEM Department’s efforts to acknowledge and accommodate
their "working student" population moves TCEM students
one giant step closer to making possibilities a reality.

future scholarship developments contact the Gretchen Hueni,
Development Director at 317.274.1484 or at ghueni@iupui.edu.

The IUPUI Taekwondo Program will be conducting
its first black belt test on December 12, 2003. Three students
will be testing for a black belt. Jackson
began instructing taekwondo for IUPUI in August 2000. The
program has grown
significantly and she hopes to eventually develop a competition
team for the National Collegiate Championships. Last year,
IUPUI had several students who competed at AAU State competition
and are Indiana State Champions! In addition, the taekwondo
team competed at DePauw University's Horangi Cup last Fall
and won the Team competition. If you are interested more information,
please contact Chris Jackson at cjackson@iupui.edu.

WHAT’S
UP WITH TEACHER EDUCATION?
By Dr. Ed Shilling
As the new school arrived, so too did the
usual experiences of our Teacher Education students. The experiences
about which we will write today are the student teachers and
a few of the most recent job placements.
This school year we have 13 students involved
in the student teaching component of our program. The students
participating in the first semester will student teach for
12 weeks at one site. Those involved in the second semester
will be our first on the new plan. That plan is for them to
have an 8 week experience at the high school level and a second
8 week experience at either a middle school/junior high or
elementary school level. The students involved this year are:
