Changing of the
Guard
By Jim Bennett
The Department of Tourism, Conventions
and Event Management wishes to formally announce two major
changes within the department. Dr. Brothers has stepped down
from her role as Department Chairman, a position in which
she has served since 1987. This was a planned move as Dr.
Brothers will be on sabbatical leave from the university during
the fall semester. She will be working in various tourism
venues throughout the city during the sabbatical, and will
resume a full-time teaching career in January 2004.
The School wishes to thank Dr. Brothers for her sixteen years
of service as Program Chairman. Her dedication and tireless
efforts have resulted in significant growth and recognition
for the department.
Dr. Sotiris Avgoustis has been named TCEM Program Chairman
beginning July 1, 2003. He has taught in the TCEM Department
for the past twelve years, and brings much vision and enthusiasm
to his new position. The school also wishes Dr. Avgoustis
well and he assumes his new responsibilities.
Golfing “FORE” Students
By Marcia Schaefer
FORE!! This could be heard on June
25, 2003 as golfers enjoyed the day while supporting “The
Leo and Mary Durbin Family Scholarship” to benefit students
majoring in Tourism, Conventions and Event Management at IUPUI.
This was the first of what is planned to be an annual event
at the Hanging Tree Golf Course located in Westfield. Tee-off
was at 8:30a.m. Guests had the opportunity to meet members
of the Durbin Family, participate in raffles, and meet students
and faculty from the TCEM Dept. Prizes were given to the top
three finishing teams. The day was a success thanks to the
many local sponsors, the planning committee and the support
of the faculty and TCEM student volunteers. Over $5,000 was
raised in support of the scholarship.
Who were Leo and Mary Durbin? As newlyweds with no prior hotel
experience, but with adventure in their hearts, they bought
the 85-year old Lollis Hotel located in Rushville in 1926.
They patched the roof, changed the drapes and the sign out
front and the “Durbin Hotel” was born. Leo, Mary
and their seven children operated the hotel like a family-style
bed and breakfast for 53 years. The couple had four sons who
followed in their footsteps. James retired as president of
the hotel division of the Marriott Corp. and has operated
his own hotel business, Durbin Cos.; Don operated the Indianapolis
Marriot East and was its general manage until retiring in
1990 (he passed away in 1997); Dave retired as associate manager
of the Indianapolis Marriott East; and Bob is retired executive
vice president and director of worldwide operations for the
Sheraton Corp. He returned to Indianapolis in 1990 and was
general manager of the Marriott East for nine years. With
a history deep in the hotel industry, it is only natural that
this family would establish and help support a scholarship
fund. In their parent's name they encourage and help future
entrepreneurs of the industry.
Congratulations May Graduates.
